Is sunlight just a gimmick?

Everytime it's bright and sunny outside people are like "Oh, what a day! It's so great! Great weather!". It almost seems fake, like a conditioned response.

Clouds but not quite raining yet is wayyyy better. You have a wide choice of clothing for it. Maybe I wanna wear a jacket. But it's not so cold that I can't wear a t-shirt by itself. If you like shorts you can wear shorts. Even a light sweater. What you won't be doing is walking around shirtless or in a bikini.

Also the sun makes you squint. Or makes you wear sunglasses. It wrinkles your skin, and fades your tattoos. What's the big deal with sunny days?

Does anyone here really like sunny days, and if so try to sell me on the idea.

Ah, but if we were sunlovers, we'd be out frolicking on the downs instead of robed in sepulchral gloom, tapping away at our -

Hang on - is anyone posting through WiFi from the beach?

Often I walk around town with my camera, and then it´s good if it´s sunny. Then I can just take pictures and they´re all focused. When it´s cloudy, many photos are a bit blurred.

What I don´t like about sunny days, is the brightness of the sun. A couple of years ago, I talked to an optician about it, and he agreed, that he too has the impression the sunlight has become much brighter in recent years.

And around here, sun does not equal warmth. Before I go outside, I always have to listen to the weather report, so I can dress accordingly.

Funny you should mention the photo thing. I was out getting coffee this morning and the sun was out, and the only redeeming thing was that colors were brighter and everything seemed more detailed.

I agree on the "sunny does not equal warm" stance Mist has. Though we are in wildly different parts of the world (i think) I have the same problem here. I have Weather.com bookmarked with my zip code in place.

I think thats why I dislike the sun, because in the desert, is the winter, the sun is a fucking liar:

sun: "Elijah, look at me, shining brightly, put on shorts and com frolick even though it is december!"
me: "OK sun, you wouldn't fuck with me!"

Then I step outside and my eyeballs freeze solid.

During the winter where I live, the clouds signal precipitation, which means snow generally. If there are no clouds that could mean one of two things: it's not as cold as normal, or it's so cold that there's no chance of precipitation. It's often the second possibility: it's so fucking cold that it hurts to expose an inch of skin.

So, in the wintertime, fuck you, sun!

Please tell Mr. Sun that it is not supposed to be 100 bloody degrees Farenheit in fucking April.

Sunny days can kiss my rosy ass. Seriously.

Rained all last week on my week off after a beautiful weekend which I was obliged to sleep through.

Now my working week starts again (tonight) and wa-hey! The clouds part and the sun beams down on me with that "don't even THINK about being able to get to sleep, motherfucker" look on its face.

I don't know what I did, but whatever it was God obviously didn't approve.

I have crazy awesome night vision, but the drawback of that is that my eyes are extremely light sensitive. If I go out side and the sun is visible at all, my sunglasses are on. The only time I'm ever out in daylight without them is when it's so cloudy that the sun is completely concealed. Otherwise, if I'm out in the sun for more than a moment, my eyes start to hurt pretty much instantly. So fuck you, sun!

I love the sun. I love it when it's sunny. At least now. I love how everything is clear and more defined, especially on a hangover and after a long dark night.

When I lived in a hot country and it was sunny, hazy and humid every day, I would dance and rejoice when there was a cloudy sky and rain fell, for it meant that I could stay home and be introverted.

Nowadays because almost every day is cloudy and grey, when the sun comes out, my spirits are lifted and I become more happy. The only thing is that when it is sunny nowadays I feel I HAVE to go out into it, and any indoorsy type plans for that day are cancelled.

Sun is also good for you (but like almost everything in life, not too much).

Really? Maybe you should just use faster film or a different digital camera setting.

In my epxerience, most photographers prefer cloudy days just because details get blown out... when it's sunny the film can't capture the full light / dark range, so you either have to shoot for highlights (no details in shadow) or vice-versa.

henri cartier-bresson is a really good example of this... although walker evans certainly used shadow to great effect in his architectural images.

Well, I live in the ptropics, so it's quite simple: SUN: hot. Cloudy: wet and cold. It's a no brainer. During summer, we have hot sunny days with a half-hour storm that can sweep houses away (usually at the end of the day) It's refreshing. During "winter", so to speak, we alternate bewtween sunny warm days and cloudy cold days.

I love sunny days. I love to "crocodilate"* under Sol's light, feeling my body producing vitamin and melanin.

Of course, sunny days are much better on weekends, when one can hit the breach or the pool, and not stand at the office, sweating like a pig.

* this is a slang that means "to stand under the sunlight, not moving much, absorbing heat, optionally with mouth open". You know, like crocodiles do.
