What's your favourite colour, Blue?

Ted Kord will always be one of my favourite characters, but I tried not to let that impact on my opinion of the new Blue Beetle book.

One year Later, post crisis, a new Beetle accepts the mantle, takes up the scarab etc

It seems that the creators are going for a pure teen aquires powers and how this impacts his life story, so often seen in comics.

The first issue was nothing special, no real intrigue was built, no real sense of character beyond that he is a poor teenage boy was developed. The only thing raised that may go anywhere was that for some reason the Green Lantern's rings don't like the new Beetle.

Apart from that a pretty disappointing start to a new series. It seems very teen aimed (the style reminded me of Static or Prime), but with not enough action to draw any interest for even that target.

Not sure if I'll bother with any further issues.

I read it. It was okay, lovely pictures... might pick up a second issue after flipping through it.

Nothing grabbed me. Left it on the shelf.

I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag - what was there was pretty fun, but there was too much self conscious 'setting-up' going on and I don't think there was an original thought in the whole issue 9actually, it reminds me of a cringe-worthy fan-fic I wrote when I was about 13, but that's a story for another time).

The only thing I did really dig though was the reference to spawn-campers, which made me laugh harder than I probably should have. For an old dude, Giffen sure keeps up with da kids.

Overall, it does just seem like your average teen-gets-superpowers X crossover-kick-start kinda book. Not really pushing the boundaries for this 'sentient' DCU so far, is it? I hope it skips ahead to OYL soon, so we can skip the "I can shoot lasers out of my belly button? Kewl!! OMG, what's happening, my arm's fallen off - oh no, it's just my robot sidekick, Beetie, let's have an adventure" stuff, and get to some more interesting stories. If I want that I'll go back and read my fanfic, thakyewverymuch.

i've always liked Cully Hamner's art, but as has been said above, this was very much 'been there, done that.' I suppose if I were 13 and just discovering comics, it might seem cool and fun to me.

what's a spawn-camper, by the way? I try to keep up with da kids also but guess I'm not in on this one.

If you're playing an online-shooter (like Unreal, which is mentioned in the issue) and someone hides near where people appear (or spawn) to get easy kills, then they are a spawn camper. They are scum, I like the stand against it that Giffen takes - it's an important issue for our modern generation. Uh... maybe.

Just reread this today and I really enjoyed it this time around. Not that I didn't like it the first time, but I was quite pleased with the characterization from he top to the bottom.

Until the book frames the Immigration Debate with an invasion by the Khunds, I'll be looking forward to this book every 30.
