Well, i'll start this off by saying that for some reason, Sonic Youth albums in the recent era seem to leak early. 2 months early to be precise. I don't know about Murray Street, but this certainly happened to Sonic Nurse, which was widely available months prior to it's release.
Compared to other bands like, oh, Tool, who have been so secretive that no leaks have occurred 2 weeks prior to the release, this is a pretty long lead time to have to wait to actually buy the album. One must wonder if the review system is flawed or the band doesn't care. Speculate.
Anyway, I have heard the album, and I like it alot. It struck me as immediately more accessable than its predecessor, and alot less sonically dense. It's somewhat a softer album, and it definately has elements of the Sonic Nurse sound - the sound that Sonic Youth seem to have on the last album is still here somewhat, but it's more stripped down, more refined, and more verse chorus verse oriented. I have to say it's kind of like taking the song structures from dirty and putting sonic nurse aesthetics on them.
"Reena", "Jams Run Free", and "Lights Out" are my favorites so far. "Rats" is the Lee track on this one, it's interesting, I like it more than "Paper Cut Exit" but it's not in the Karen Revisited league or anything. |
