For my old friend toksik

here are some super scientifically skilled west coast MCs that once took my schizophrenic mental to another level and back.

Latyrx by Latyrx (Lyrics Born & Lateef)
Seventh Seal by Freestyle Fellowship (Micah 9)
That's how it is by Casual
Let em know by Souls of Mischief (Opio, Phesto, Tajai, A plus)

I hope you like them too

Rza's my hero. The way the words roll off his tongue.
Yo, yo, The Riddler, funny bone tickler, freak Caligula
Bigger dick sex enigma pistol fertilize your stigma
Stinkbox, order from pink dot
MC's get stuck on ink blots as I plug to the sinkbox
Wu-Tang Incorp. take your brain on spacewalk
Talk strange like B-jork, great hero Jim Thorpe
How can I put it? Life is like video footage
Hard to edit, directors, that never understood it
I'm too impulsive, my deadly corrosive dosage
attack when you least notice through explosive postage
I don't play, the rap souflee sautee for the day
Ruler Zig-Zag-Zig A, Leg Leg Arm Head
Spread like plague, we drink Hennessee by the jig
I got the golden egg plus the goose
Eighty proof, Absolut, mixed with cranberry fruit juice
Ginseng boost, I got yo' neck in a noose
Keep my money wrinkled, the rap star twinkle killer instinct
sixteen bar nickle sell more copies than Kinko
Grow like a fetus with no hands and feet to complete us
and we return like Jesus, when the whole world need us

Vinnie Paz (aka Ikon the Verbal Hologram) on Jedi Mind Trick's "I who have nothing" off their first full-length "The Psycho-Social, Chemical, Biological, And Electro-Magnetic Manipulation of Human Conciousness"... Nice beat with the tom jones sample too...it's hip-hop-as-numb-isolationism rather than hip-hop-as-uniting-party-people. Not everyone's cup of tea.

As I decay, demons prey above me like a vulture
Ability to endure contradiciton is a high sign of culture
Verbal sculptures, self defacing
It is not God or lunacy that I am facing
But the erasing of the purity and passion of my words
The herds of cattle babble on with talk of the absurd
But I preferred
To walk away from all the feuds
To find my life is more confusing than a rubic's cube
So i'm subdued
In all my words of verbal prods
To live alone one must be an animal or a God
But it's official
All of my pain is clear as crystal
The natural side of life has now been seeming artificial
But I can hit you
And rest assured that i'ma last words
I could give a fuck about ya secrets and ya passwords
I can pass words with the ability to hurt you
Patience is a virtue and knowledge is a ?commercial?
I who have nothing but the pain that I refer to
I who have nothing but the pain that I refer to

...

Lost among the miracles, I stand alone
And i've grown into a being that's sitting on top of throne
I've known
For many years that I would turn to rust
I find a reason for another breath
Before my return to dust
I become one with science and mathematic and the rising of the sun
I'm numb
To all of those who blinded cannot see
The chastiser of the enemy
Perception requires duality
Inspect ya soul, the color of coal inside the body
I have hardly, come across them who's holy
Send them to the ?cheribem? to control thee
Burning of the sun and frigidness of the cold
The battle field is new but the war is now old
You can never see the merest shadow of a halo
Above the head of evil jin who's deadly like tornado
The world has become an aquarium
Full of gaping fish with murderous mouths
I on the other hand stand on the outside looking in
Writing down murderous files
I who have nothing but the lack of variation
And I who have nothing but chains and suffocation

And then the vocal sample at the end, bam.

i havent heard the jedi mind trick.
i'll rectify that as soon as a possibility.

right now i'm rockin the rakim.

it's almost like he set himself a mission to get all the rhymes on record before anyone else could. the dude just keeps on talking, talking talking... he rides a beat like a master, and you can't fault his style.
he's even been 'homaged' by eminem!
and more!

it doesnt hurt that the beats on 'paid in full' are some of early hip hop's finest boom bap.

Organized Konfusion, both MCs have (had?) extra-ordinary skills. Pharaoh Monch off "Releasing Hypnotical Gasses" rhyming invocation style.

I am one who is one with all things, thus the unorthodox I am
The paradox I am, the equinox extending my hand
into dimensions to unlock new doorways
And so the light has revealed to me that there must be more ways
And so I play with rhythms, for something more than a mere game
enabling me to advance in wisdom
Words will exist like vampires
No need for sunlight, from concentrations camps I escape
with my sanity -- in 2010 every man will be
subject to global warming, formless oval
Millions of locusts swarming
Seek and you shall find the deliverer of a rhyme
the intelligent one, utilizing the mind third vision
Surrounded by a three-sided figure, containing the brain
The triggering mechanism from which I strike
sight beyond sight, sound beyond sound
which comes from below the magma, the granite, the ground
The surface will seperate, dispersing harmful ashes
Your optics will not be able to detect
the deadly hypnotical gases
Damn it's hard to breathe!!! But if I got one breath left;
I'll suck wind from the valley of death, here I come
from the slums of earth to center
I reveal myself as a beast within a, unbreakable shell
Walkin through the doorways of Heaven -- or is this Hell?

I take 'the deadly hypnotical gasses' to be the air exhaled while mcing.

I'm feeling the UK hip-hop.

Jehst has a verse on "communications" (Lewis Parker) that really resonates with me. Couldnt find the lyrics.

Jehst - Trilogy remix
Chester P Hackenbush overflowing with insane rhyme originality:

i spray walls so we can battle for the writers bench,
and fight against the odds like daniel in the lions den,
you bite my style- i'll cut your hands off and write with them,
don't breathe down my neck or i'll stop ya flow of nitrogen,
you said i'm nice blood? you'll have to say i'm nice again,
my ways are set like cement, swinging like a thousand spidermen,
hit so hard some rappers never write again, like a dried up pen,
so you just can't rely on them,
to step to me's to put your own life in jeopardy,
you could walk a thousand miles and still not get next to me,
i'm so beyond it's only future that's ahead of me,
to battle me you'll need to travel to the next century,
i'm so high-up even mute people try to mention me,
my arts are sharp mentally, when i think you're meant to bleed,
i'm blackin' out cuz i haven't got the strength to see,
my hate's blind so i'm running dangerously on lengths of beef,
i'm old skool like a real pair of hippy's flares,
when i go to bed i cuddle up with a grizzly bear,
i move so fast most people ask is he there?
i leave now and by tomorrow i travel 50 years,
so if i was you i'd be pretty scared,
tryna buy a new set of pants cuz i know you're in a shitty pair,
i spit bricks and build my own little city here,
while ya fallin' off like paul daniels' wiggy hair.

I really like battle rhymes... another good one is "One Shot One Kill" off of Twista's Resurrection album, i have no idea who all the MCs are, they keep coming one after the other ripping mics apart and then Twista fires the last verse, well it has to be heard to be believed. It's viscious stuff. I couldnt find the lyrics online.

Klashnekoff - Son of Niah

I used to listen to this song every day for months... it blessed me with a lot of energy

Yo my thoughts grow like herb in wild fields of mango
A certain man of jankrow, I'm flexed like flamingo
I'm buffalo, this shit gets venomous like Kosovo
The manimal, man of maneuver undetectable
I'm out the manor smokin' the poisonous vegetable
Soakin' in herbs and drawin' the vital mineral
Channel my inner Chi, regain my energy
Can't ya see me, I'm a soldier
Penetrate the pain barrier
Carry the legacy that's left by my father
Dictate my work manifest into scripture
I paint my pictures with sound clash
Ya sound crash no counteractions
I cut my dubs from the stomach of the mountains
Buildin' the rhythm from the natural surroundings
Surrounded in red mist
Yo, grabbin' my Charlie Bronson, manifestin' ya death wish

Now in these days of Daggo my mind stays raggo
Rugged like Brilo, these eyes bleed weeping willow
Its parose, sleepin' on pistol like pillow
Cushion the agro and escape into the astral
Communicate one to one via my afro
The Son of Niah, a killer born natural
But still I'm neutral
cause I can shoot you
Or twenty one gun salute you, whatever suit you
In times of crucial I consolidate Sukidu
Seein' my future through the eyes of a desert eagle
There's no sequel 'til my soul settle
I can't settle,
[yo, settle,]
it's the continuous struggle
The environment is hostile
I'm stressed out, blowin' sess out my nostril
Apostles warnin' of storms on the coastal
Contact the locals, we symbolise now with subliminal logos
It goes deeper than big bangs and black holes
On roads, I stop to admire a black rose
She's so beautiful, I chose not to pick it
While another wicked man would have did it

Now triple nine is the reflection of the ripplin' time
While cripple minds run blind into the eye of the storm
I've fought wars and returned war torn
My wife was scorned, she took the life of my first born
So be warned, these days of times are now transformed
A pen is a now formed of states and collateral
As clapped opium petrels, a rose sent to capture you
From Clapton to Katmandu, what can a man do?
It said man handle my inner feeling, sealing the inner angles
Maintain my balance while walkin' on broken ankles
My moods manifest into red shades of scandals
Home of website of deceit we weave
My chest heave, I breathe to ventilate this grief
I'm seekin' relief in a brief glimpse of Parrowdice
Beget left paralyzed from the Jankrows and parasites
My eyesight, from great heights of hindsight
I'm tryin' to align the blind mind with the divine light
But find my life to be a start to the death
So fuck vex, my mind state is Semtex
Explosive guides of venomous viper
Stalk the beats like a wild tiger
The Son of Niah, spit my phlegm on the flames of desire

sway.
motherfuckin heck, sway.
i've been enjoying his shit on and off for a wee while now, but the other day i went for the full immersion.

i cannot wait to hear his shit as the career unfolds.

Sway is fantastic - yet further evidence of how real skill on the mic is nothing to do with cramming in as many big 'scientific' words as possible. Or, as he would put it "all they do is complain about Ma$e / Carry rapsacks and rap about space!"

Bruno
22:22 / 23.05.06

does that make sense??

it makes more sense that if you are attracted by the lyrics you can download the song or steal/borrow/buy the album.

curtis jackson does it all the time, dude.

one of my favourite things about sway is the way he feels like he is just speaking to you, albeit lyrically.
he really gets a hold of the words, and he never follows rules where doing so would fuck the flow or the mic-rock.

i fucking love his 'soccer balls' rhyme mumble, saying more by saying less, attracting your ears by hiding from them.

it's those little momenst, and his occasional clatteringly fast yet brain shatteringly on point delivery come together with some solid ideas to make something quite special.

i wonder if he'll collaborate with any yanks anytime soon?
i'd like to hear his voice with ludacris or maybe busta.
he could hold his own, i reckon, and iimagine it would make for super-mega, proper awesome shit.

Hip Hop on a screen without the lyrical delivery and beats is boring to read. Personal engagement isn't.

12:06 / 24.05.06
Jackie maybe I am the dumb one I didn't understand your question...yes I read the thread.

Illmatic you have a point about personal engagement although I like reading lyrics if they are good. I find it a bit difficult to think of enough adjectives to talk about MCs (except if I dont like them). I will give it a shot.

Chester P Hackenbush's verse above is very advanced and original technically, you can tell he put a lot of work into it; they are really weird rhymes (writers bench, lions den, write with them, nitrogen, nice again, spidermen, write again, dried up pen, etc etc) its amazing he pulls it off. I like listening to this kind of MCing more than the classic run/gun/one, bitch/ditch/switch, money/honey/funny and of course bigga/nigga/trigga/figga. It's more imaginative.
Plus he is invoking the MC persona in a kind of mythological way but also showing the roots in reality by name checking things like graffiti. He does the invocation-mythical stuff to great effect again on "Jellyfish Kiss" by Task Force. 'talk myth but its all real'.

re Kool G Rap he is one of the masters, my favorite songs are Bad to the Bone and Streets of New York. He is really strong over fast beats (like Rakim & Big Daddy Kane also of the Juice Crew), and he is famous for going on for ever (i think Men at Work has a really long verse).

re KRS I agree with toksik's recomendation (Return of the Boom Bap) and also add BDP's Sex & Violence and also his self-titled album (favorite track off that one is probably Build ya Skillz)
"KRS runs shit like diarrhea"
"clicka clacka, clicka clacka, take a spray can and smack a whack rappa".

If you like Paid in Full you might like MC Lyte's 'Lyte as a Rock', it's the same kind of beats but Lyte is less smooth, more raw, she has a strong personality in her tone.

I downloaded two tracks by Sway (flo fashion and download) and have to say I wasnt impressed, he didnt seem to be covering any new ground. For an MC to have a good flow in my book he needs to sound like he is moving around the beat, not letting it carry him. Just an opinion, right.

i am not clear if the point of this thread is to praise rappers we like or specifically about praising technical (or other) chops.

it's pretty much up to you.
i was thinking of it as a lyrical miracle showcase, somewhere to gush or sigh when that perfect piece of razor sharp poetry hits you square in the brain.

i reckon you can talk about the dudes you love, or the shit you love, or even 'keystyle' your ass off.
heck, you could even bring up slam.

to me its all about celebrating performed poetry, emphasis on the hip hop variety.

I find it a bit difficult to think of enough adjectives to talk about MCs (except if I dont like them).

hation is in the abstract, if you feel the urge.
alternatively, you could try negativising the hation;

"
man, busta rhymes make me feel really not bad, and i would certainly not take the first opportunity available to rip his fucking head off, neither would i enjoy shitting my angry dinner down his gravelly throat.
"

it's not as good as praise, but we'd get the idea...

i have a total soft spot for busta, esp. since the end of his 03 remix guest spot ubiquity.

one rapper i've been loving lately is lupe fiasco. everybody at least knows him for his verse on Kanye's Touch the sky, but he has a recently leaked, Kanye-free album called Food and Liquor. it's really great - he's thoughtful but not too herby, stylish and substantial, smart without relying on 50 cent words. his single kick, push, about learning to skateboard as a kid, is probably the sweetest rap song i've ever heard. this is the first verse:

First got it when he was six, didn't know any tricks
Matter of fact, first time he got on it he slipped
Landed on his hip and busted his lip
For a week, had to talk with a lisp, like thissss.
Now we could end this story right here
But shorty didn't quit, there was something in the air (yeah!)
He said it was something so appealling, he couldn't fight the feeling,
Something about it, knew he couldn't doubt it
He couldn't understand it, branded, since the first kick flip he landed (uh)
Labelled a misfit, a bandit
A-koonk-a-koonk-a-koonk, his neighbours couldn't stand it
So, he was banished to the park
Started in the morning, wasn't stopped after dark (yeah!)
When they came and said, 'it's getting late in here
So I'm sorry young man, there's no skatin here.'

Masta Killa on 'Mantis' (Bobby Digital), drops science with characteristic relaxed delivery over one of my favorite RZA beats.

...listen to the guns holler
Swallow the shell, East New York terrorist
Break fool to this, madness, crazy low-hand
grabs the mic stand, smooth as water
Spat Seven Seas you've not yet mastered
Breathe and lungs wheeze, Earth kills
I'm wreckin MC's, blood spills, meadow is round
The piercin sound of silence deafens ears
Fires fears, wood sharp eagle claw tears
tree from bark, hard to maintain control
When you leakin I stand with the strength of Jobe
and hold pressure that'll bust your head, while I'm teachin
civilization, one havin Knowledge
Wisdom Understanding Culture Refinement
Not a savage in pursuit of happiness
Thunderous mantis, all chant this

mouthing off by ludacris!
i only got it a week or two ago, and i have already played it more than is reasonable.

ludacris has a great swing to his vocal, but it's really 4-IZE that takes the prize;

Yo, I am goin to blow up the Earth
with my "pew-36 explosive space modulator"
Buddha be praised, you meditator
Drop squad interrogator, 85 percent regulator
The Educator and the Almighty Creator, dedicator
The seperater of fiction, I spark friction
Smoking "Hay" without the Crucial Confliction
4-Ize prescription; microphone, Jackie Stallone
Psychic prediction, Egytian descripition
of my psychical, my flesh is weak and it's pitiful
Spiritiual is hooked up to the invisibile
umbilical cord of my Lord, Kumbiya Devine Kah
Remove paper of tar from every cigar
I slap authority like Gabor, Zsa Zsa
Half Allah, Half Anti Christ Superstar
Rockin the microphone with a hand like Dr. Claw
While I'm hittin trees - harder than Sonny Bono
Double Dragon, mixed up with an Abobo
I kill villians in slow-mo for talkin crazy in my Dojo
Got nothin to lose, like I'm a boxcar hobo
When I get Ludacris with bridges on the promo
Niggaz wanna clown; I'm Homey and Bozo
Cause in the grand prize game my life callin like Jo-Jo
The name sticks like Toto
I keep it realer than alien autopsy photo
You similiar to a Spice Girl goin solo
You lost like BEBE! or a dog named Toto
My statue of liberty is Rebecca Lobo
We Cop Robo, virgo
Bust ass like a motherfuckin homo, como estas?
Tony Del Negro
Built to destroy these kid's blocks of Legos
Lego my Eggo cause I say so
Hold the microphone, 4-Ize, I stay gifted
Manifested, elevated, I uplifted
The elevator, the escalator
"That's not a knife? That's a knife!"
Crocodile Dundee the Alligator Rustler
Cause I hustle ya, under the China
Big Trouble, little sewer but still I find ya
Cause I'm stinky
Manifest, throw you down the stairs like a slinky!

Yo, my third eye is blinky...

Currently enjoying Dose One a lot, but he seems to attract a lot of ire, too. And (cough) MC Frontalot.

Toksik: I live in Quebec, and The French People I Know give a lot MC Solaar a lot of respect. I think he's aged a bit like Chuck D in their estimation... if you listen to It Takes A Nation Of Millions now it kind of sounds dated, but it's still good powerful stuff.

And to quote Saul Williams, "Not until you have listened to Rakim on a rocky mountaintop have you heard hip-hop." Which I actually did, in northern Quebec in January of 2003, and it's good advice. Thank you Saul Williams.

I really like the new Saul Williams track:

I'm lookin fa Mrs. Bubble Gum
I'm Mr. Chik-O-Stick
I wanna dun dun dun
Cuz you so thick
Gurlz call me Jolly Rancher
Cuz I stay so hard
You can suck me for a long time
Oh my God
Gurl dis ain't no dance flo'
Dis a candy sto'
And I'm really geeked up
And I got mo' dro
I pop, I roll
It's soft I know
It's da summer time
But yo laffy taffy got me froze
Gone get loose
Gone get low
don't be shy
I kno' you wanna ride
You a star and it shows
