In terms of characterising the city Christopher Wren is probably a good nomination. The list of buildings that he had a hand in sits on this Wkipedia entry and the city is very effected by them architecturally.
In terms of fashion it's probably Mary Quant who is the designer who had the most influence on the largest number of Londoners at any given time. She created a culture that lasted for a long time and reached over class barriers and through the population in a way that wasn't limited to a counter or subcultural group. Her fashion extended beyond London to create a perception of the city that people attempted to revive again in the 1990's with cool Britannia and very few fashion designers can claim to have caused such a recognisable relapse, even if the whole thing is a bit cyclical. I don't like her designs particularly but they're incredibly easy to recognise. |
