So I'm stuck. I'm designing costumes for a production of "The Magic Flute", which is apparently heavy in Masonic symbolism, but I can't find any sources for Masonic symbolism. I understand that there is an Isis/Osiris, light/dark contrast, and a sense of the importance of knowledge, but otherwise I am stuck. Does anyone have any basic information about the Masonic Order and the symbols prevalent in their rites? I'm not looking for any specific information that would violate any trust.

I thought it'd be easy to google, but there's that many conspiracy related and confusing things that don't really help when you use google for something like this, that I had to search a bit more. I found these though :

http://www3.tky.3web.ne.jp/~jafarr/Masless.htm

and a page that has more links :

Albert Pike's "Morals and Dogma" (1871) is a classic on Masonic symbolism:

Be sure to encourage your set designer to incoporate a black and a white pillar into the design. Very important Masonic/Qabalistic symbolism. Jacim and Boaz

Now, this may be totally out there, but I would suggest finding a lodge near you and asking them. If you explain what it's for, they may just decide to fill you in on the basics.
They should have a certain interest in having their material presented truthfully. (Provided you don't reveal their Great Secret )

Dunno if this helps, but here is an illustrated diagram of the degrees of Masonry, complete with hip duds. Link

The square & compass is probably the most common masonic symbol.
