Any Danko Jones fans about?

Been spending an annoyed day at work, using Danko Jones to get over it - and I realised that I didn't recall these guys being discussed on Barbelith.

They're a Canadian three-piece, fronted by a guy called Danko Jones (duh) and I reckon there'd be a bit of an audience here for them. If you're into Turbonegro/The Hellacopters/Young Heart Attack/that kinda rock thing then you'd probably like them. Two albums I've got, Born A Lion and, particularly, We Sweat Blood are well-produced, tight-as-fuck rock beasts in that sort of AC/DC way. It's tongue-in-cheek, but not in a Darkness kind of way. I guess the best thing to do is to find a copy and listen. Not At The Drive In, but not quite Andrew W.K., either.

There's some streaming songs off their new album available here.

Danko also runs a radio show that's archived online, outta Sweden. Called The Magical World Of Rock with Danko Jones, it's a themed thing, with show titles like The Misfits Vs Rocket From The Crypt, Spotlight on Fushitsusha, Spotlight On The Boredoms and Rock Bands That Kill People - so you can get an idea of both the taste and the humour of it.

Anyway, they're touring Europe at the moment, with mid-late April dates in the UK (Londoners: the Garage on the 10th, Loomis: King Tuts on the 22nd). Their gigs are listed on their site, so I was wondering if anyone was planning on going - and whether they could give me a report on what the shows are like?

Other than that, whaddya think of the band? They get a certain amount of slagging for stupidity, but I didn't think that was really a cardinal sin in the world o'rawk.

Thoughts?

"fan" since day one. actually i like their earliest material best, because it's still got a very punky edge to it. fast, rough and not very clean at all. but the later releases are also quite good.

but the main thing, the one thing that you have to see to believe, with DANKO JONES are their live shows. i mean, if you are into that whole testosterone-dripping-off-the-walls-not-very-serious-about-machismo-but-still-talking-about-dick-and-pussy-all-the-time thing (which i sometimes am, if it's not taken too serious) than it doesn't get much better than a DANKO JONES club gig. club, mind you. open air festivals or big spaced venues tend to take away from the animal magic.

also had some opportunities to talk to danko and damon about this and that and (as so often) found out that the whole "stupid", "ignorant", "ballsy" and "arrogant" shtick is just something that he (they) on stage. totally different persons off stage. you get that often with image oriented rock bands and (let's be honest) which four-to-floor rock band is not a poseur's convention?

oh and by the way: don't dis ANDREW W.K. - there's more to the guy and his music than most people are willing to admit. actually, i think that most people that really go against ANDREW W.K. (not talking about the "don't care. not my kinda music." types, i mean the "stupid bs! who listens to that dumb shmooze? inane!" types) are afraid to admit that ANDREW W.K. strikes a very deeply rooted and even deeper buried chord with us and that scares some people. not saying that that's a general rule, just what my experience with other people and 2 lengthier discussions with andrew led me to believe.
[about the technical aspect of ANDREW W.K.: recently had the opportunity to listen to "i get wet" on a high-end hi-fi system, actually set up for classical music - there are pianos and third and fourth guitar harmonies and lots of other stuff going on there that you don't hear on a casual listen-by or in your average headphones. guess that fits my basic notion of ANDREW W.K. - as simple as it gets to get a point across, but at the same time there're deeper and more layers to it for those that want to hear it.]
and ANDREW W.K. was the second most intensive live show i have ever been to. and i've seen quite a lot.

Danko Jones are so utterly stripped back- it's like the very core of blues/punk/metal.

Danko is one of the best frontmen I have ever seen...ever...I caught them supporting Monster Magnet a few years back, and they blew lil' Dave's socks off. Strutting, howling sex rock of the greatest proportions.

For my money, "bounce" is the greatest foreplay song in the history of sex.

Werwolf: I didn't actually diss Andrew W.K. anywhere in the post. He's seen by much of the press as a joke, but I think his albums are very good, very rockin', and very funny. He's like Turbonegro - very much so.

ah, i wasn't really serious about the "dissing".
just wanted to lay down what i think of AWK, while we were on the subject.
