Yeah, dunno what you're driving at there gumbs? I mean, it really won't matter that x & y wanted to lock and delete Sauron's thread in two weeks or whatever - I think they were wrong, and they didn't get their way + it was explained pretty clearly why. So, I'm quite happy with the resolution - in fact, I don't really think this thread is very necessary.

Well, personally, I've been wondering for a while what Gumbitch meant by the following over in the Moderation Requests thread, and this seems as good a place to ask as any:

[quoting Nina Skryty]: "if I were an amputee I assume that I wouldn't be happy to lose a limb and having that loss mocked would be pretty fucking upsetting."

now, i find that sentence hilarious and would probably barbequote it if i thought the wind was blowing that way, however i understand that presently the local convention is to give credence to that kind of position.

Why is it so hilarious? Because amputees are such a tiny minority that it's ridiculous?

(I'll give Sauron the benefit of the doubt and assume he doesn't mean something similar when he says In my opinion, to accuse me of making light of the plight of amputies is frankly ridiculous.)

Absolutely not. My point was that the link to having sex with an amputee's aputed arm/ leg etc was tenuous.

Haus, maybe 'spitting out bile' was a bit strong, (although I have just received a delightfully rude PM from LOLIRCLOL whoever s/he is) but I still felt this thread contains a fair bit of finger wagging. In my book, when someone genuinely apolgises that's the end of it.

So why don't we make this the end of the thread now?

Hang on... you mean you think that this thread was full of people "spitting out bile"?

Holy cats. It's remarkable to say this in a thread about a thread about doing naughty things to stumps, but I think that this might be (and I hate myself for saying this) a prime example of oversensitivity.

While I think "hilarious" is pushing it some, the assumptions around which the sentence's logic is based render it somewhat... well, speculative. I'm not sure to what extent the "tiny minority" plays a part, but in the absence of actual offended parties, such hypothetical constructs do arguably start to edge toward the absurd. People who've sustained facial injuries from blade attacks might, I imagine, make up a larger part of the population than amputees, but if I were to suggest deletion of all instances of the word "faceknives" on the grounds that some might be reading and might conceivably be offended, I suspect I'd be in a similar position.

If you read my post Haus, I said I may have made an overclaim, so your argument is relatively redundant.

The basis for my point is there is no need to bang on about the horrors of swearing etc after someone has said they won't do it again.

Ah, well, for sure, and if you happen to have a look you'll find that I defended your thread vigorously against the moves to lock and delete it, and also that personally I don't really see why not swearing in thread titles is such a big deal. I'm just saying that if you can't deal with your actions being subjected to this level of scrutiny and discussion without raching for the big book of bodily metaphors (spitting bile, wagging fingers - that's the kind of night that lingers), you're probably in trouble on Barbelith. We be talky.

This is an incredibly circular argument.

I didn't claim you didn't defend me, I claimed I was surprised people have kept talking about this after I apologised. I have since agreed that my tone on this point was perhaps too strong at your behest.

PS What does 'we be talky' mean? It has an appalling ring to it.

Has the whiff of someone trying to get the last word in a thread that should have finished 2 pages back-.

Ah, well (again). You start a thread, people will contribute to it. That's why it's always best to tuck these things away in someone else's thread. Mind you, if you want to avoid further discussion, not repeatedly reminding people that you're apologising even though they're oversensitive/bilious/overdigital is also a good idea.

"We be talky" just means that Barbeloids are a talkative lot.

Do you mean 'We be talky' or my ps about 'we be talk?'?

(not trying to have the last word honest)

The point is Haus, this thread was already dead for everyone except you.

Ah, well (again). That's possible, but I'm not the one currently keeping it alive, now, am I?

You know, I'm rather enjoying this elderly, pipe-smoking persona. Youth. It's wasted on the young.

RIGHT!

Sorry Haus but i'm gonna have the last word now and here it is:

Hindermate.

Hindermate - hellva word to die for. If I was going to die for a word that word would be poooon-tang.

This has nothing to do with anything, but this whole thread is begining to feel like the end of the French and Saunder's sketch of The Exocist.

I live in the hopes that one day you'll be able to go a whole day without being needlessly offensive. Then we might be able to extend it to two days, three, four...

What do you think Math. Why don't we try that? Starting now perhaps?

I've got two replys for you lady, both of which I think are fair.

The first is that if you found what I said offensive, then I am truly sorry. I'm guessing that it is the reference to 'poontang' which has offended you. I'd like to explain that this is a reference to to the film Full Metal Jacket - the orignal quote is "Freedom, hellva word to die for. If I was gonna die for a word that word would be poontang." Again, if the offense you have recieved from the post was due to the word poontang, I am sorry, and hope you can see that it wasn't meant to be.

The other reply is this - I'll try, Lady, but I don't think anything I can say won't offend you.

See, it's the duality of man.

okay, i had some pms asking for clarification.

all done in a bit of a late afternoon blur, but the approximate sequence of events: i read a post, in the conversation i think, from haus where he complains about the misperception of his [insert haus' thing here] by other posters, generally along the lines of being confused by accusations that he's more of a nasty bully than can be proven by any textual references. i came straight from there to this thread with the complaint fresh in my mind, whereupon i saw his resurrection of this thread after almost a whole day of dying which was, i felt, one of the rare instances where haus' hausness did some harm to perceptions of his on-board character - the thread was done and dusted but he came in with what i thought was an antagonistic and needlessly, erm, 'close'(?)-ly phrased way of finding a new route to an argument with the many-apologised sauron, which is i would guess one of the kind of instances which gives people the 'feeling' that haus might be a more divisive and harmful figure than is actually reflective of the content of his posts.

so, long story short, i was pointing out what i perceived to be a problem with haus, not a problem with tom, as some have seen. i just quoted tom because it was handily illustrative at that point. apologies to tom if you thought i was taking a pop, and apologies too to haus because as i said above it was all rather late-afternoon, far from charming, a little badly thought-out, very unlikely to be conducive to further peace, and definitely a waste of time-consuming boldy tags.

but while we're here, 'hilarious' because of the fact that nina actually included in her quoted sentence this: 'i assume that i wouldn't be happy to lose a limb', a clause which is careful enough to allow for the legitimate experiences of those around a dozen documented worldwide cases where sufferers of a certain type of body dysmorphia have voluntarily become amputees and thus would NOT be offended by the stump fucking thread. (they might even get a bit of a sexy off it.) i certainly felt that was worth a bit of a giggle, or to put it in barbelith, violated the sovereign territory of absurdia.

Math, I think this is a problem similar to that raised with Sauron's thread. People aren't going to necessarily recognise that quote (para-quote?) as being from a film. I've seen FMJ a couple of times certainly (not recently) even so I only have a vague memory of the line now that you mention it.

Part of the problem is Barb-communication is text-based. So without clarification, it's hard to know if a comment is genuine/a quote/intentionally offensive. Do you see?

The Stump-f**king thread might not have been such a big to-do if some mention of it being about The Mighty Boosh had been made on either the title, the summary, or the introductory thread. Similarly, mentioning you were quoting FMJ might have been an idea too.

Just a thought.

Yeah, good point - from now on you'll see all my quotes referenced.

i've talked about this in another thread, but i dont think flagging your jokes is doing much beyond robbing them of their power to amuse.

a good reference does not need explained, for it makes perfect sense in the new context to which it has been introduced as well as being from another source.

i'd suggest looking at what the references add to the post, and see whether anythinhg else would do.
with the poontang quote, the relevance to the thread is minimal, and the similarity of the film's situation to the one being commented on is invisible to me.

you could as easily have said almost anything, and your comments would have been just as funny/relevant/necessary if FMJ had never existed.

sorry if this seems overly heavy handed, i just thought i'd share what's run through my mind on this.

basically?
if it needs explained, its a crap joke/piece of art/etc.

i fear jack(of the axe and the beard of righteous zeal) may have put it better before, but that'll do for now.
