So here's the background, or the "bg" if you like to abbreviate. I come to work, and my boss and a co-worker immediately ask me if I know what this word means. Well, my Latin and Greek and whatever help me deduce that "theometry" means "the divine" and "measurement," so put it together and theometry means "the measurement of the divine". It turns out this strange polymath (my intrepretation of their experience; full disclosure) came into my work and handed out strange business cards reading, "[Blankety Blank]: Genius, Accountant, Theometrist" Sure, whatever, I said. So I did a little research, or in other terms, a Google search:
The first hit (as of this post) was a blog defining theometry as "a pun, a joke". Okay, I'm with you so far, guy. Further down the Google results is this gem: nothing. Ooooohkay.
The word "theometry" does not appear in any of my dictionaries at home. Nor does it appear on Dictionary.com or Wikipedia. So, as someone might put it, WTF?
Is this a joke? Is this serious? Have you ever encountered this word before? |
