Quoters—Use Google search to find threads on the board related to some topic which pleases you, displeases you, or provokes thought. Post the quotes.
Finders—Don't use google search. Use context clues to figure out where the thread is from, and find it. Link to the thread. It'll be brilliant! (It's also okay to use the barbelith search, since it's moderately pants.)
I'll start:
1)Hitler's crime, the crime of fascism, is precisely the mass dehumanisation of people...In effect, fascism lives in each and every attempt to categorise or dehumanise other people.
2)I think one of the main factors that allows us to hurt other people (or other sentient beings, to come over all buddhist) is reduction of their qualities, dehumanisation. ... I guess the same goes on with goverment sponsered torture - reduction of an other to an "enemy"/political sterotype as a necessity before hurting them.
3)Stigmatisation tends to dehumanisation, and dehumanising someone permits one to treat them in 'cruel and unusual' ways.
4)there's a big part of me that feels like that line in The Godfather: "They're animals anyway, so let them lose their souls."...We should not "accept" them as different, because it's not a cultural difference we're talking about here -- we're talking about nothing less than imposed intellectual inferiority. It is our fault that these people are morons.
and to make things easier, from the same thread but a different poster:
empathizing with them may well have a similar effect to that of, say, empathizing with a cobra. While I'm aware of that, I also acknowledged that they are not so different from us...
(Disclaimer: Quotes taken out of context for the sake of the game. My intention is not at all to characterize— and especially not to antagonize— other posters by digging up old posts of theirs with which they may or may not agree now. I am being passive-didactic, which is like passive-aggressive but without hostile intent. Do not run while holding this post and trip over the electrical cord and stab yourself in the head as this could void the warranty.) |
