Anybody into yo-yos or Skill toys? If so what do you use? Favorite brands etc?

I currently use a Duncan Freehand Zero un-moded.

(watch this thread sink like a rock)

Would this also be where poi-players and fire-spinners post? Because while I don't have the dexterity myself, I'm a fan, and I'd love to see people post pics of their poi and firepoi adventures.

Surely it's about time for a yoyo renaissance? I seem to recall at least two separate yoyo crazes from my childhood. Funnily enough, I don't remember ever buying any, but I had about 3 at one time. Sort of like football cards, they'd proliferate in the schoolyard.

I could only ever do the really basic stuff. What tricks can you do assayudin?

Oh the standard fair. Walk the dog, Rock the cradle, trapeze etc... I got into them when I was in grade school (during one of those yo-yo crazes) and then recently, since I've been releasing my inner child, got back into them. Now I just mostly freestyle, letting the yo-yo spin (sleep) and doing variations on string tricks.

The really cool part is unbeknownst to me, a good friend of mine was also friends with Steve Brown. He's the Duncan Crew yo yo master. He invented the freehand yo-yo style, where there is a counterweight on the string and it allows you to do tricks where you completely let go of the string. There's some awesome stuff out there.

Check out Sector Y and The Glass Lab for some great videos.

And yes, poi and the like are more than welcome in this thread!

Somewhere, I have a Yomega which, when properly tweaked, does just what it advertises. It's a well-balanced yo-yo with a decent weight to it.

Basically, all it is is a yo-yo with a clutch around the axle so it'll sleep really well. It's the only yo-yo I've ever gotten to do a cat's cradle properly.

On that site, it'd be the model called a "Brain Classic." On the box, it just said "Yomega" -- it was the only model they made.

Oh.. yoyos..

I prefer yoyojam yoyos. I currently use an nice xcon and one of those "black magic" or whatever (i can never remember the name). I have spacers and konkave bearings. both play very nice. i am waiting on my Sirius to come in. i like the metal rims.

I run howtoyoyo.com and am casually involved in the pro yoyo scene.

I do have a bunch of cool videos and i would love to trade tricks/ meet up or whatever.

word.

The idea of a "pro yoyo scene" tickles me.

What are the cultural indicators? Special asymmetrical yo-yo sideburns? Stencil t-shirts with a single, long thread coming off the right sleeve?

String burn on the fingers. Lots of extra string hanging from belt loop. And (not kidding here) Yo Yo tattoos.

For years, I kept an extra string in my wallet. Funny thing was, I'd almost never have a yo-yo with me... just the string.

No tattoos, though.

I wonder what Tommy Smothers would think.

the scene is really weird. i think the two things that characterize the yoyo players are: being male and being in high school.

yoyo conventions are so ridiculous. At worlds last year.. i think the entire place hushed when two 19 year old women walked into the giant gym. All yoyoing stopped. It was amazing.

anyway.. yea the scene is scary. and it is apparently rather universal. I had a long discussion with one of the more famous japanese yoyo players (black) about benig a nerd and yoyoing all the time and never meeting girls; and how girls are just not involved in the yoyo scene. He agreed and talked about how it was exactly the same in japan. weird. hahah. only nerds yoyoing and only dorky men.. wtf? haha.

As a 28yr old, i often feel ancient. and like i have made a poor life choice persuing yoyoing rather than sometime more glamorous like.. umm.. parachuting

Yeah, but it's getting sexier. I mean not 'sexy' per se. but definately sexier.
