What kind of internet connection do you have?

I really know very little about bandwidth and contention and stuff, so I'm hoping to get a bit of techy education along the way (or at least pick up a bit of jargon).

So, I have a 2MB ADSL connection on a 50:1 ratio. My downloads seem to top out at about 250 Kb/s. Is that pretty shit these days?

I'm tempted to upgrade to 8MB but someone told me that it was a bit of a con (that you don't realise a significant increase in speed - but fuck knows if there's anything to that).

So, come on, dazzle us with your downstream.

I don't even know what anyo of what you just said means. I signed up for 2 meg with Homechoice, then got a card in the post the other day saying it had been doubled to 4 meg. That's all I know.

(Mind you, it only occurred to me yesterday that the DVD drive on my old computer was fucked by StarForce. I AM TEH SP00N when it comes to complinketer stuff).

I've got no idea what the size of mine is, but I gather that in relative terms, it's almost laughably small.

But it's a question of what you do with it though, innit?

Personally, I do almost nothing.

Currently I'm sitting on 512k/128k but I'm waiting for my local exchange to be upgraded and then I'll be on 8mb. At the moment, I believe this is a similar situation to most people on broadband in Australia, due to the shite backbone Telstra installed to begin with. hohum.

An upgrade to 8mb will probably only be noticable for downloads, rather than browsing, which I guess is the con... Do you do lots of bulk downloading?

My mates sister has 24mb and I for one hate her for it.
