I think I want to buy a new digital camera. I'm not sure why, but I've come to trust my instincts on this sort of thing. I've been using a Minolta Dimage Xt, and rather fancy the X1 - the idea of it being called number 1, but obviously being at the end of an aesthetic and technological line rather appeals to me. Also, 8MP is just stupid o'clock.

Anybody have any experiences, recommendations, that sort of thing?

I heard on the radio once that the acquisition of mere objects masks a frustrated desire for spiritual completion.

Balls to that hippy crap.
I really recommend an IXUS, as they seem to take pretty good pics, are fairly sturdy and, most importantly, are teeny-tiny (fits insdie a fag packet) and can be carried anywhere so it's a matter of two seconds between seeing something interesting and getting a photo of it. I know you probabaly want something more high-end, but there's no point having a flashy camera that you're scared to take anywhere in case it gets broken or nicked or is just too damn big.

I'd suggest a Canon as well. My Powershot A95 is a great little camera and not really that much bigger than an IXUS. You might want to look at Steve's Digicams for reviews. I see this site recommended everywhere and it was certainly a great help when I bought my camera.

I thought i'd actually take more pictures once i got myself a camera phone, but i seldom actually use it.

I probably should, shouldn't I?

Have you considered getting something decent, like a Nikon D1x? Not only is it a vast improvement on the shiny silver snapping like a turtle nonsense, thrust upon the monied impulsive by ignorant, commission grabbing saleshounds, but the ability to buy new accessories for it should offer your poor impulse control some direction in life.

Are you selling your old one?

Were I fortunate enough to own one I could assure yout hat I would not be selling it. I am merely endeavouring to stem the flow of vile, shiny crap that some people have the gall to call cameras and direct Haus to something of quality.

Whose radio was that?

TSK: The Nikon D1X is a good idea, and I could store it next to the howitzer I use for killing roaches.

Calumny.

There is no such thing as overkill when it comes to cameras.

Don't get tricky with me, haus, I am just trying to determine if you are looking for spiritual completion.

Do you have any lenses from other cameras? My life partner inherited a nice Canon lens and so went for the Canon Digital Rebel. Lenses are expensive, but hold their value very well.

I believe that this is the version he has.

Much cheaper is the Panasonic Lumix, which is what I have. Great, crisp photos and amazing looking video, tiny and weighs nothing so you can tote it around in your pocket, excellent anti-shake, biggish screen, battery that refuses to die. Downside: no viewfinder, so in bright sunlight it can be a little tough to see images clearly.
