How to read academically

I have been a student at university for nearly 3 years now, and still have problems understanding how to read properly. When I pick up a densely academic book, I get exhausted within 20 minutes and usually only pass through 10 pages or something.

Is there any specific technique you have for reading books of dense material? I also find it a pain to highlight what I like and index it too. Besides the focus of my degree Politics & Law, I like to read philosophy. I would love to learn a way of storing what I read accuratley. Is there no other way than pen & paper?

Any advice is much apreciated.

You might find some of the advice here to be helpful. I know I did.
