i want to start with the Stone Roses, i was out with friends who i consider to have excellent taste in music a few weeks ago who claimed 'that the Stone Roses are the most underrated band evah'

now despite their debut lp being voted best LP of ALL TIME by Q readers and i think in the top 5 by Mojo readers how much more adulation do they want for this lot? best piece of music of the 20th century? greatest achievement by humans?

their debut is basically Primal Screams Velocity Girl track made shiny and produced for people with little interest in music that takes an effort, barely audible off key vocals, guitar wankatronics to liven it up a bit and the band dressed as scallies (whilst in fact being Goth chancers) to draw on the rave / lad culture / madchester swell of interest at the time. Fools Gold is an aneamic james brown knock off rhythm dragged out beyong its time for people who are vaguely interested in 'Dance' but don't get House, or Black music in general.

it's not that its really bad, just that it is thought far to highly of for such an average record.

the second lp sucked even more ass but at least it's not rated so high.

so, next? bowie, the beatles, oasis?

Doctor Beck- love that you are posting in music- but this thread already exists here.

I never really liked the stone roses either- i saw them at a secret gig in 1995 Ian Brown sang out of tune a lot and the songs went on way way way too long.

atmosphere & excitement is one thing... but the band were a bit rubbish- i even remember sitting down while they were playing another extended guitar solo.

The bigest excitement of the night as i remember was trying to chat up a certain bewildered French exchange student staying with a friend- but i digress.

They were ok- the night was fun- but i remember liking it more for the fact that i could boast about it to new university friends- rather than thinking Ian Brown was god, the reality was it was a bit rubbish- especially when i compaire it to many other great gigs i've been to.

as i remember gumbitch most of your excitement came from the presence of a couple of brothers called Gallagher and the bloke from Gene in the crowd- rather than the actual show.

sorry for extending this thread maybe we should move this conversation to the other one?

Radiohead.

Man, I liked OK Computer too, but I really don't get the appeal of most of their work since then. There have been a few good songs and a lot of stuff that just makes me wonder what I'm missing.

Thing I dont like about Radiohead is they're a little to perfect, everything goes together just that little bit too well, I like a bit off mess in me music, gives you something to measure the non-mess against thus making it ultimately better. whereas Radio Head just dont seem to fuck up at all which is just boring frankly,

Not only that but they are public school bastards, who've had everything handed to em. dont even get me started on the Clash...public school bastards ripping off the Ramones then going all Reggae, white public school reggae bastards?

What's wrong with being a public school bastard, MG?

If you had children, wouldn't you work jolly hard to give them the best start in life that money could buy?

Or are you saying you'd rather just see them, your own flesh and blood, end up mainlining Tennants Extra in a public convenience, just for the sake of a political principle?

Why in the world is it called "public" school in the UK? In N. America, we call it "private" school because it's hard to get into. "Public" schools are the ones that allow absolutely everybody off the street.

HELP!

Chuff yes, being a (northern)working class hero myself, it never did me no harm. Tenents is the thrupney chuffing lifeblood of this country. Not some noncey "ooh im so full of trust fund ennui" Chuff (ee by gum).

As I understand it "private" schools are where aspirant middle class people send their youth. "Public" schools are where the great and good (old money) send their kids, I assume theyre called "Public" because theyre more like public institutions because they maintain the status quo in terms of class dominance (maaaaaaan).

Please let threadrot end- surely conversations to be had elsewhere on Barbelith as i'm sure many people would like to contribute to the debate-

the other thread that we mentioned above is here- any chance a mod could lock this one and any further posts be put in the other- more extensive thread?
