Marvel Annihilation

Although there is a slew of mini-maxi cross over series mix ups out there at the moment, thought I'd mention this one, in case it's passed people by and just to talk about it really.

The prologue came out last week, I don't know much about it, save that it seems to be leading into 4 mini series that tie together and deals with a cosmic crisis in the marvel universe. So far so Rann Thangarr I hear you say, but this is different for one reason for me - Kieth Giffen, who handled this kind of thing with LSH and whose hand is present in the reshapping of the DCU at the moment is involved.

I must admit that I wasn't that interested when I saw something in Comics International about it, but I flicked through the book in the store, and there was something in the art that I liked - it kind of looked like a cross between Giffen himself, Quitely and any story from Heavey Metal that I remember as a kid about space.

I haven't read it properly yet, but it starts grandly enough, lots of destruction, lots of space, lots of big villainy and over the top-operatics, and seems to be using 7 soldiers as a template for the series.

Anyone else get it, read it, like it, hate it, etc

Read it, didn't like it. Too many characters were broad cliches (beat cops, bigots, or fanatic zealots). And I'm not sure if it was Kolins' art or the coloring, but the battle scenes felt lacking to me.

OTOH, there were some nice bits with Ronan and Thanos.

Thanos ain't Thanos without Jim Starlin. I wonder why ol'Jim isn't involved in this project at all. This feels like classic Captain Mar-vell to me. The only thing missing is a really confused Peter Parker and humourously annoyed Ben Grimm.

Also, question: is there any Adam Warlock in this project at all?

If I remember right, I believe someone said that there wouldn't be any Adam Warlock because he was used so much in every other cosmic story Marvel's done.

Did anyone else read this? I really enjoyed it.

I downloaded it as it came out, but have re-read it twice since I got the Hardcovers.

The collections put the mini-series in chronolgical order rather than the original release order. Which makes perfect sense, but it does ruin the incredible effect that the minis created that shit was going down in a massive way all over the place.

My favourite moment of the series was the jump from the minis to the first pages of Annihilation proper, 6 months have passed and all the characters have grown and changed immesurably, dug in on the front lines of a galaxy wide Bug-War.

Anyway, now I've said that, is anyone reading Annihilation: Inevitable Sequel?

So far we've had the prologue and the first issue of 2 of the 4 minis. it's been interesting enough so far, but really it's all just more of the same so far, most of the major players from Annihilation are there, but the focus is shifted slighty.

I don't really buy The Phalanx as a threat so far, but I'm certain ther'll be a big reveal with somebody engineering the whole thing, as has been foreshadowed.

The first issue of Wraith was abysmal, unfortunately. Even worse than Ronan was at it's worst.

Nova was really good though, his mini was the star of the first go round and his journey through and since Annihilation has had me fall head over heels for the character. Which means [+] [-] Spoiler

Annihilation and Seven Soldiers were the best things out of the Big 2 last year IMHO.
Annihilation was solidly written and drawn with some kick ass ideas and HUGE set pieces. Man, when Keith Giffen is in the mood he can write like a Bad Motherf***er.

Conquest sems promising so far, but i think alot of Annihilation's success for me was how under the radar the series was and how well it turned out.
Conquest has a lot to live up to.

Conquest could be cool, but it seems like the concept of the Phalanx is being altered pretty heavily.

Spoilers for Nova#4

Is Nova toast? The thought boxes were in Richard's style not the Worldmind's, but then Ko is in the suit and theres a smoking body behind her. Without the suit I doubt he can repair the damage to himself. I hope we don't now have Nova with a new person, just as I was getting into Richard as a character.

Well, keep in mind there used to be thousands of Novas. It seems likely to me that while Richard is probably healing from that crisping, the Worldmind went and empowered another Nova.

Like when Kyle started handing out other GL rings in Green Lantern.

That said... The Phalanx as baddies? I... I just can't take them seriously. Still, for being what they are they've been well-handled and I'm psyched about Star-Lord.

The solicits for Wraith #4 say that a player in Annhilation is behind Wraith's actions. How much do you want to bet that Thanos is involved in the Undead Kree Goth Space Cowboy's origin.

Undead Kree Goth Space Cowboy.

"Undead Kree Goth Space Cowboy" indeed. Nice turn of phrase.

I loved Annihilation and am enjoying the new metaseries just as much. I hope yearly cosmic tales can become the norm at Marvel, although the invasion/war paradigm might need a breather fro time to time.

And I don not think you need to worry about R Ryder: he's old school and will no doubt return ASAP. I am loving NOVA, which is working nicely in spite of starting out with Annihilation I and II/Civil War tie ins/backstory.

Hallo, Paper Spaceboy
19:30 / 03.11.07
I picked up the first collection (Drax/Prologue/Nova) this week and I've been really enjoying it. The Giffen helps a lot and while I find the art a bit uneven (though I really liked Kev Walker's Nova stuff), it was enjoyable. The artist -- whose name escapes me right now -- that did the Drax sequence was very reminiscent of Jae Lee. Looking forward to grabbing Book 2 this week coming, and I'll probably post more about how I felt overall once I've read more.

Book 2 is definitely the weakest of the three, the Ronan mini-series is the worst offender, even the most pointless of the epilogues from book 3 overshadow it.

this week sees both the final Conquest prequel mini end, and the first issue of Conquest proper. I'll probably be back to say more once I've read them, but I'll give you the gist now: Crap.

Oh, the final page of Conquest #1, revealing the identity of the "real" big-bad is floating around all the usual internet spoiler places, if anyone can be bothered at this point.
