The Farm are the best band in the world

'Saw you walking down my street
Well you... looked quite neat
Baggy jeans and long blonde hair
With not a... care in the world
What happened to the attitude
You used to... have at school
What happened to the attitude
When you... broke all the rules?'

Groovy Train

The Farm are the best* band evah. Love It Sees No Colour, Stepping Stone, Groovy Train, need I go on? Fab tunes and well deep lyrics, people who like them are cool and people who don't are silly, people who agree with me make sense and those who don't have no taste, music is not what it used to be and anyway it's about the memories you associate with the band not the music innit.**

*Yes I am aware of their 'Don't You Want Me' cover
**Of course I am Devil's advocating, please extoll the virtues of musical discussion. This is a bizarre spin off thread caused by my £1.99 'Best of the Farm' CD and Flyboy's policy thread a while ago about the decline of musical discussion. Humour me.

I am neither going to extol the virtues of The Farm nor malign them but you have a valid point about a liking of music being about the memories you associate with the band. I have an avid love of Supertramp purely because I remember the glee of dancing around the garden at age five singing, "right, right, you're bloody well right".

I no longer feel that thrill of saying 'bloody' since I do it all the time, but I do still listen to Supertramp, especially when I want to wallow in the memory of my Dad.

The Farm just makes me think of snogging boys at rugby club discos.

See, heartwarming memories!
"Love it sees no colour
Friendship is the same
Love it has no borders
Hear the wise man say"

Aaah, poetry.

Maybe the music forum is often quiet because talking about music requires a common starting point that's difficult to get on a messageboard. If you've never heard the Farm (or of them) or don't care for the genre or have no particular opinion, what's to discuss? Very like Books in that respect IMHO.

I don't keep up with current releases particularly, I like a lot of old music, I have vast blind spots and eccentric obsessions (Nazi Jazz, Gypsy Punk, Folk-Hop...) and so I feel disenfranchised by Teh Music. Maybe it's because I don't have a TV, maybe it's because I'm old, maybe I just don't grok what's cool with the hip kidz, but what is there to tempt me to the music forum? Anyone?

agreed, and in some ways discussing music *is* pointless. at least in terms of trying to convince sceptics of your own point of view: you either like things or you don't but unlike with, say, film and tv, there is an almost unlimited array of options in music so we rarely consume stuff we don't like.

what is there to tempt me to the music forum? Anyone?
well ... good question. since i arrived here in barbelith recently i've been (w)racking my brain to come up with threads that are not along the lines of
i like *insert artist name*, hands up who else does ... yahboosucks to those who don't
still (w)racking i'm afraid, but keep checking!

that said, the "what are you listening to" and "interesting metal" threads have yielded some truly amazing new discoveries, and are two of the best threads evah imho.

Swap CD's (We were meant to swap last september but it seems lamesness got the better of both of us- in fact The CD iss made and sitting on the shelf of my office!), hear about new music/ discuss ideas about music/ the music industry/ the politics of music- from selling out to red wedge. Soundtracks and music videos, Joycore to Nazi Jazz. Share anecdotes about when you heard something- what it reminds you of there is soo much to talk about here!

The great thing about Barbelith music forum is that its not been founded on a set of rigorous 'rules' of what music we should be listening to- hence Girls aloud can a have a thread next to Tool.

Those who worry about posting about music for fear of getting it wrong should re-think, the only people that seem to get shot down are those that declaire certain music to be shit- those declairing their love for something are all the more welcome.

I love talking about music, hearing new music- I also work in a part of the music industry and am often keen to know what other peoples thoughts are on whats hot and whats not- what the issues of the moment are etc.

Talking about music is far from pointless Quants if you don't want to post in this forum you'll be missed- I may even post that CD to you to give you something to talk about... you started talking once about Devendra Banharts Guru- re-open the threar and tell us more...

Copey- ditto, I have the playlist but haven't burnt the CD (moving house etc) so on the plus side you get Nazi Swing and Gypsy Punk which I didn't have, and maybe lose 'where's me jumper?' by the Sultans of Ping FC which is probably for the best.. I'll do that this weekend.
Then I can come here and post the track listing and defend my taste to the death! Having thought about this a bit more, it occurs to me the fun part about talking about music is shouting across the table at each other about whether or not the bongo drum solo on Gadda Da Vida is too long (it isn't) and whether the Pixies count as Rock (they don't). Copey, you are right and I've seen the light- MusicForumSpamMachineGO!

So, case in point- The Farm rool! Remember how cool baggy was at the time? They're like the zeitgeist of the early '90s, it's only in the cold light of retrospect they're funny, just like almost all other bands.

Quantum, j’accuse, you are Peter Hooten aren’t u?

The Farm was a rubbish band, they stole the Mondays sound, but forgot to steal their grooves or drugs. Peter Hooten danced like he was looking for where he had dropped his car keys. All in all, they reminded me of footballers who weren’t quite good enough to get in the team, so they formed a band. Do you think if the Farm and Liverpool F.C. had swapped places for a day, anyone would have noticed?

The Mondays were genuinely dark and scary; the Farm weren’t even as good as Northside, in my opinion… and don’t even mention Flowered Up…

talking about anything is probably pointless, in my opinion, but if I have to talk about something, it might as well be music...

Say what you like about B*Witched but lets not go knocking "Where's me jumper" that song should be the Irish national anthem.

only if 'groovy train' gets made into the new English national anthem... yeah, I'd stand up for that!

on Quantum's recommendation, I checked out some Nazi Jazz- I managed to get hold of 'now that's what I call fascist bebop! Volume 3'
let me tell you, that stuff just does not swing. in fact, to my untrained ear, it sounds exactly like f***in Stockhausen...

yr twistin ma melon, man!

Quantum, you've peaked my interest. I'm off to the garage to see if I can find their greatest hits in the bargain bin.

And on a different note, the reason I like discussing music is because it's pointless - there's no real conclusions and it all comes down to opinion in the end. It gives one a convenient arena to test one's debating skills, and I'm a self confessed music snob/obssessive.
Mind you, I've damn near lost lifelong friends in those late night after the pub "Judas Priest are great / no they are rubbish" quarrels..........

Judas priest being any good or not is a hell of a quarrel to nearly lose lifelong friends over..!
