Seriously though, I think I'd rather see something a little different. Flower power was all well and good, but the dark forces cycled back in with 80's. I always saw the dance music culture as an attempt to produce the next iteration of the 70's vibe.
The popular theory about sunspot cycles – and I point out that I don’t actually believe in this, just reporting – is that every 11 years or so, in tune with the cycle, there will be a cultural shift.
It follows what can loosely be termed a “punk” / “hippy” trajectory. So late 1950s leather clad rockers, are followed by late 60s flower power hippies, are followed by late 70s punk rockers, are followed by late 80s rave kids on E, are followed by… er… late 90s black trenchcoats, nu metal, the Matrix, 9/11, etc… are followed by another new iteration of the peace and love “hippy” vibe but in unrecognisable new clothes.
The numbers don’t quite add up, and in all likelihood it’s bollocks, but you can sort of see the repeating iterations through popular culture if you wanted to. According the theory, it will be something very different. Not a retread of 60s flower power in the same way that late 80s/early 90s loved-up rave wasnt a retread, but could easily be seen as an iteration of the same wave. |
