The mythical AC car

Could it possibly be true?

According to the website, Tesla invented an AC engine in 1931 which was capable of driving the electric car at speeds of up to 90 m.p.h. When the superstitious suggested he was using witchcraft to power the vehicle, he dissassembled it. There are no blueprints, no diagrams, just a receipt from the local hardware store and a few newspaper clippings. When asked where the vehicle got its power from, Tesla replied "From the ethers around us."

Now, I don't know much about Tesla or his work, but an AC car that went 90 m.p.h. would be pretty useful. Did Tesla invent something that modern science hasn't yet discovered, or is this website pulling my leg?

There are a lot of stories about the wonders that Tesla produced. It should be remembered that the American government reputedly removed/destroyed a lot of his work after he'd died.

I hadn't heard this particular story before. But I have to say I'm a little dubious about it. It sounds a little too much like the various stories of perpetual motion engines I've heard. One would have thought that if a device like this could be constructed from electrical shop products that one of Tesla's devotees would have been able to replicate it.

I'd like to believe it though. I want a car with an etheric enigne.

I want a car with an etheric enigne.

... that flies.

Joking aside, it's just too good to be true, if you ask me.

IIRC wasn't Tesla also working on broadcast power? If so perhaps he already had a power-caster set up somewhere and the device he built was just a receiver for it.

That was my first thought: broadcast power. Those were the days you could try anything. These days somebody would probably whinge about pedestrians who stood in the microwave beam getting fried.
