This is a thread to list books to recomend to people who like On The Road but should read other things as well. If indeed you think people should. Go on, fire away.

This is in the convo because it's probably going to be too "listy" for the Books forum and sneakily insert another name, possibly Rimmer, here, for comic effect.

Screw the Kerouac and jump straight to the Ginsberg. I DEMAND that you get very drunk and recite the entirety of "Howl," especially the Moloch section, which will open your head and there you go. Poetry, sure, but brilliant poetry from an occasionally dodgy fellow who got Thelonius Monk onto shrooms.

And then you should read some Raymond Carver short stories, because the man knows his business.

Generation X by Douglas Coupland.... although that may be only because I had to write an essay linking the two of them back in Grade 13 English. To me at least, it has the same kind of young wandering thing going on....

The Subterraneans by Jack, because its a beautiful love story, and I love his description of Mardou.

Go by John Clellon Holmes, because although not the best Beat novel by any stretch of the imagination, it provides a portrait of Jack (and the rest) before they were famous.

The First Third by Neal Cassady, because he was the epitomy of that life style, and his autobiography reflects that.

And these books by Richard Brautigan:

Trout Fishing in America
Revenge of the Lawn (Short stories)
The Hawkline Monster
Sombrero Fallout

because Brautigan is so much fun to read.

Under the Volcano by Malcolm Lowry. It´s got love, alcohol abuse, tragedy, travel, betrayal, everything a good novel could need. It´s the story of a man in Mexico, who destroys himself and takes other people down with him. Written very beautifully.
