Tarot decks for beginners?

I've been thinking of getting a tarot deck for while now, but never seemed to have the extra money, or wanted to get something else more.

So what would be a good deck to start with? I looked over the decks at the store yesterday and my mind boggles at the choices.

I'm sure people will recommend the Rider-Waite deck. That's all well and good, but if I'm going to spend 15 or 20 dollars on a deck of tarot cards, I want them to be well...pretty. The Rider-Waite deck is just plain and uninspired looking.

I've got the "Prediction Tarot Deck" which I've always liked - it's kind of mythic enough to be interesting but plain enough to not seem forced. I like it - and there was a book that a friend had that I would completely recommend if I could find it... I think it was associated with the deck... Here's the link!

The Robin Wood deck is Rider-Waite inspired, and, imho, very lovely. Many people really seem to connect with it.

Also, the Universal Waite deck is a lot more subtly colourised than the traditional Rider-Waite deck. http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0880794968/qid=1015188576/sr=1-1/ ref=sr_1_1/002-9310225-4301629

just go with what you relate too. people told me that thoth was too advanced for beginners, too much symbolism (some said it had dark associations because it was Crowley's conception), but i really liked it and it has given me pretty enlightening readings. so go with what you like. i really like thoth.

i won't give you a link to an online store that carries them, because all (or all i've seen) of the thoth tarot decks sold online are printed in the US. they're of inferior quality. they have a greenish tint which just ruins them for me. check for the greenish tint in the shop and also check if it has three magicians. if it has three magicians it's printed in germany in the right colors. it might also be otherwise, but the three magicians are a guarantee. (or used to be at least, maybe this has changed since i was looking for it).

Crowley's book on his tarot is available online here. it's very qabalah based, not much about divination there, and a bit crowley-ish but has still given me great insights into the tarot.

lots of decks out there retain almost none of the traditional symbolism and are just about looking good or about a nice theme. i would personally never go for those, mainly because i think all this traditional symbolism actually means something on a pretty deep, jungian "mythos" level. i think that if people are going to use something that doesn't have this traditional symbolism they should use a deck of their own making or someones whom they know very well.

but that's just my opinion. lots of people get good readings with those untraditional decks, though i could never relate to them.

Ooooh, that thoth tarot deck looks pretty.

How do you recommend I check the cards? I can't just go about opening the packs since they're wrapped in plastic. As much as I'd love to liberate them from their plastic prisons, it may not be a good idea seeing as how 1) I'm a pretty frequent customer there and 2) I just put an application in and it could cost me any hopes of a job if I ever get to the interview part. I can see it now:

Interviewer: Hey, I remember you. You're the guy who took the plastic off 40 packs of tarot cards.
Me: Um well....you see...I had to find one that appealed to me and the plastic got in the way.
Interviewer: I'm sorry, we can't condone those kinds of actions and it would reflect badly on us as a company if we hired you.
Me: Well, crap.

I'd go to a new-agey occult type store, but
the closest one is in Nashville. The only thing in this town that comes close to dealing with tarot decks and the like is some yoga place that sells relaxation aids and all that.

just write down the names of the decks, go to this site or this and read the reviews. they usually have some pictures to go with the words. in the case of thoth, it might have some hype on the back of the outside that it includes three magicians or is reproduced faithfully. also if it's from AGM or AGMULLER it's most likely printed in the right colors

edited to fix url fuckup

I'd also recommend the Thoth deck...don't worry about all that 'difficult for beginners' bollocks...how long are planning on being a beginner anyway

Crowleys' The Book of Thoth however whilst being full of great stuff and insight is proberly not the best first book to read on the Tarot...i'd recommend Hajo Banzhafs' The Crowley Tarot as a good compliment to the deck

I'd also recommend using the connections between the Cabalas' Tree of life and the Tarot as a great aid to learning the cards...Instead of the 'looking at a card...looking up it's meaning...remembering it's meaning' way of learning map out the cards over the Tree...it give you much better insight into the Tarot and really helps you learn it...

then there's Tarot : Mirror of the Soul , but upon reflection i think Ghadis' suggestion is better.

Ghadis, any recommendations that really explore qabalah and tarot in parallel?

any comment on Rachel Pollack's Seventy-Eight Degrees of Wisdom? is it any good?

PS: i don't know how to link to books on amazon so barbelith gets a cut. please follow Tom's links when you're buying stuff.
