Actually, I've noticed a difference between the practioners of magick and those of magic. I noticed it when I was looking through alt.magic.illusion or some such thing.
Practioners of magick are more than happy to help a newbie. They'll happily direct them to books, websites, and even give examples of how to do a ritual.
Illusionists, on the other hand, are snotty bastards. I read this post some grandfather made asking how to do that whole trick where you make a piece of candy disappear then you pull it from an audience member's ear. He just wanted to know so he could amuse his grandchildren. No problem, right? It's really a simple trick. Not so. The high and mighty magicians were all "Go read a book! You think we're gonna tell you how to do that? Its taken us YEARS to master and you want us to just TELL you how to do it!"
That's the distinction I make. Magickians are nice friendly people, and magicians are snotty bastards who need to remove the stick from their backsides. |
