I'm going to Berlin for a couple of days the weekend after next, and although we had a good thread a couple of years ago on kulcher and beleathered gayer hostelries for Ganesh and Xoc, this weekend is going to be that hetpanic apotheosis - the Stag Do.

So, does anyone have any low-kultur daytime recommendations and Englander tolerant nightspots for 10 chaps who can't really take the pace anymore but are keen to spend a couple of nights deceiving themselves that they can. Staying in the Mitte district, if that helps.

Viel Dank.

Oh, this thread must have slipped by me!

I´ll write something this afternoon. But I must tell you, I rarely visit clubs, I´m more the pub/restaurant type.

And what do you mean by low culture? What kind of activities have you planned for the day time (Shopping, sightseeing, eating, etc.)?

Cheers Mist. I was hoping you’d be around.

To be honest, pub/restaurant suggestions would be ideal.
Yes, low-culture was a bit vague really. Basically I’m talking about sightseeing.

Most restaurants I visit aren´t in the center of town. Here´s one, I´ve been to twice recently:

Lindenbräu - It´s right under the roof of the Sony Center. As it´s probably mainly for tourists, they should speak english. I´ve eaten half a duck there last week, and it was delicious and not expensive (€ 12.50). You can look down on the square from the restaurant and they are brewing their own beer.
The Australian right next to the Lindenbräu is fine, too.

There´s lots to see around the Sony Center. It´s surrounded by the Tiergarten, the Potsdamer Platz, the Holocaust memorial, Brandenburger Tor and from there, you can go and take a look at the new weird government buildings, or walk towards Alexanderplatz along Unter den Linden [but there´s even more construction sites right now than usual].

Firebar [Krausnickstr. 21] - This club is like a big living room, with space for about 50 - 60 people. It´s very cozy and relaxed. If you´re there, try Maté brause, a soft drink with lots of coffein, but don´t drink more than two, if you want to sleep that night. They open at 08.00 pm, so it´s good for the "first stop of the night". If you don´t like the Firebar or if it´s already too full, just roam the neighbourhood, there´s lots of locations. You can stroll down the Oranienburger for example, which has the Tacheles, the new Jewish synagouge, Hackesche Höfe and the Postfuhramt.

The Karrera Klub is one of the few clubs I visit. They play British and German pop music and some weird stuff, like Baccara for example. They always change locations. This Saturday @ 10.00 pm, they´re at the Bastard [Kastanienallee 7].

Thanks Mist, that's great. I will annotate my Rough Guide accordingly.
I don't think I'm going to have much say in what we do, but it'll be good to have some insight/ideas if called upon.

It's going to be hard to resist going to a club called The Bastard.

Hmmm, for sightseeing I'd recommend a boat-trip, but unfortunately you'd need an ice-breaker at the moment.

So my all-time favorite for bad weather is the Pergamonmuseum. Also there's that art exhibition about melancholy at the New National Gallery - haven't seen it yet, though, can't say if it's any good.

For a sightseeing trip through Mitte, you could start at the Hackesche Höfe, then follow the Oranienburger Str., visit the New Synagogue and the alternative Art Projects at the Tacheles and then just stroll through the Scheunenviertel, between Oranienburger Str. and Torstr. The Firebar, Mr. M. mentioned, is in this area, too.

And of course you'll want to follow Unter den Linden from the Palast der Republik (last chance to see) to the Reichstag - but I don't have to tell you about that. Just don't visit the Berlin Cathedral, it's really ugly inside.

Sorry, Morgana, I missed your reply. Those are great tips. The ruin on Oranienburger Strasse looks fantastic. I just hope we have time to see half this stuff.
Thanks again.
