Hail is the whitest of grain;
it is whirled from the vault of heaven
and is tossed about by gusts of wind
and then it melts into water.

and shower of sleet

The second Aett is often referred to as Heimdall's Aett, the Guardian of the rainbow bridge that connects Asgard to Midgard. The Aett is about powerful forces, and primal Nature, those things that are not controllable by mankind.

So we kick-start the second Aett with a corker. "Hail" is the best summary of this rune. It's the force that can batter down the harvest, and that will destroy your preconceptions. It's having illusions shattered, and your life turned upside down. However, in its wake is a level field, new ground that can be sown, and a fresh perspective of the world. I often think of the Tower from the Tarot when I think of Hagalaz. Spiritual crisis. The shamanic sickness from which comes a new direction.

Oh, and an interesting theory by Freya Aswynn is that the first three runes of the second Aett represent the Norns. Hagalaz being Urd (the past), Nauthiz being Verdandi (the present) and Isa being Skuld (the future).

Uruz rises between Isa and Isa. Stagnation of Ice or the stubburness of individual will broken by the unstoppable forces of change and growth inherent in Uruz. If you don't let it go, it will be taken from you by force, and it'll hurt.

Hail is ice. Ice melts into water. Water brings life from the fields. Although the negative aspect of Hagalaz is strong, there is a positive one beneath.

Hagalaz isn't necessarily negative. It's impersonal, somewhat distant, which can make some people uncomfortable. I find its energies similar to a Saturnian vibe; not quite as slow but definitely as cold.

Nature isn't always warm & fuzzy.

The vision upon ingesting this rune is that of a whirling vortex, extendingand opening up into the nights sky. rather like the crown chakra.

I dream of situations both lucid and surreal. I keep my reactions flexible and come to no harm or fear.

I feel that it is CHANGE that this rune invokes, the ability to adjust how one perceives ones life, character and behaviour. Time to get out of that rut.

Peoples actions whirl around me and I am lost to take charge of any of it, but ride out the storm and flurry of activity. I end up in new situation and circumstances, led by the thoughts and actions of others. I am not afraid, but embrace the new stimulation to the mind.

I understand it and do not step in its way. It is nothing personal, it is just the way it is.

How do you stay alfloat or are you swimming?

Communication and honesty, both internal and external is essential. What is torn from its roots has long seen its use fade and the space will allow new growth.
