Not meaning to shock Smoothly, but I happen to enjoy smoking when I am able to do it of my own free will rather than having somebody else's used-up smoke thrust upon me. I smoke a briar pipe and though I don't know of many other people my age, 34, who smoke one, nor any women, I predict a small rise will come in this practice. For one thing, it is not possible to smoke a pipe twenty times a day unless you've got a collection: the bowl will become dry and bitter and you won't enjoy the taste, so it's more an indulgence and less an addiction . For another, pipe smoke is not heavily processed as commercial cigarette tobacco is; neither is it inhaled nor held in the mouth very long, so the health risks are reduced. For a third, the smell of pipe tobacco is immediately pleasant to nonsmokers in a way that neither cigarettes nor cigars are.
I find that my guests cluster around me and enjoy the smell. My roommate (who is in his twenties) has since taken up smoking a pipe as well, and it is very pleasant to sit in the yard together with a cup of tea and our pipes and practice the stories we'll tell when we're old men. I must find a sweater with leather elbow patches.
I used to smoke cigars, also, but unfortunately acquired a taste for a type that is no longer available. Additionally, my favorite cigar club changed management, and now the place is ruined. |
