Magical Record / Weblog / Journal / Something

A few months ago, I made a post reporting on a minor magical exercise from PopMagic that I tried. I put it up because I thought it might be useful for other newbies to see the results; there were no fireworks or ILM-designed visions of otherworldly beings, yet it was a very rewarding little experience for the effort.

So, I started to think that it might be neat to have a series of articles or a journal or something along the same line: documentation of my muddling along, in order to show other beginners one guy's progress with all its successes and failures. Sort of a cross between a blog and a magical record. However:

1) I don't know anything about how weblogs work (technical requirements, software, is it something that you have to host somewhere, and what the heck is "hosting" anyway);

2) I think I'd like to have a collaborator or collaborators: to rein me in if I'm just writing personal details which don't relate, to help me edit since my writing experience is limited to one unrevised NaNoNovel, and to have someone who will have expectations so I will be less likely to get lazy and give up after a month. (That was the whole reason I told everyone I knew, "I'm writing a novel this November!": so that I would be shamed into actually doing it instead of briefly being excited then backing out.)

So, if anyone has any technical info or suggested links, or if anyone would like to play the Chief to my Clark Kent, if anyone has feedback on experiments I ought to include in the project, or even if anyone just wants to say, "That's a terrible idea you should not pursue," please let me know, either here or at tom_o_bedlam@hotmail.com.

A magic blog! What a great idea!

Getting a blog is a peice of cake. Just visit blogger.com (or diaryland or whatever) and sign up. If you want it to be a collabarative effort, all you need to do is give the password to the people you trust to help you out.

I look forward to seeing how it turns out.

Yeah, I think someone on here said that they used a blog to make up stuff about their life... you know that "fake it til you make it" thing and eventually everything he lied about happened. That seemed to me like a good idea.

let us know about this blog once youget it started.

I've already got an account on livejournal.com which is easy as dirt. You can also start your own blog and then start a community - so if you wanted to join there, you could have your own area, and then one that I could access (or other friends of yours or whatever).

A friend of mine set me up with another blog at www.moveabletype.com. He's a web guy, so I don't know how tough it was, but we've got a collaborative log as well as the individual logs. Mine is www.flyingfists.org .

Lemme know if you're interested in my help editing or whatever.

Get a blog and a web page. www.chaosmagic.com is a good place. Follow the instructions from blogger to put it on at another web page.

Thats what myfriend did

jonnyvoodoo.chaosmagic.com

course i don't think he got past his first post.

I've been playing around with blogger.com, entering the old entries; however, I took too long to actually post them, so my session timed out and deleted everything. I'll continue when I feel like typing it out again.

Thanks for the suggestions; I'll play with all of them to see which I like best. I'll let you know when there is actual viewable text that doesn't evaporate into the ether, grant.

Well, here it is:

Feedback! Feedback!

I was going to get editing help before making it public, and then I realized that I was trying to edit things before submitting them for editing before publishing, because I'm self-conscious like that. So I said, "To hell with it" and put it up, but that doesn't mean I don't want editing suggestions or rotten tomatoes from grant or anyone else.

One thing I did that I think might be clever is making a "Footnotes" section in case I just start rambling on--I figure it is best if any diatribes that occur are invisible to the casual reader, but can be found if one is interested. If anything is particularly drool-inducing, let me know and I'll consign it to the footnote gulag.

Also, dreading HTML and then playing with HTML are great ways to avoid actually doing stuff, so there isn't anything in the way of new material, just the handwritten stuff prepared for consumption.

(Speaking of HTML: If I'm doing something hideous from a design standpoint, let me know that, too--I took one of the blogger.com templates and tried to massage it, but who knows what I broke in the process.)

PS - Yes, the pages are on different sites. If that becomes a problem I'll eventually chip in the five bucks to Chaosmagic.com so it will accept blogger.com FTP transfers.

Neat blog. (I like the Mondrian grid look, BTW.) Look forward to seeing how it develops.

Just read through it. You, you need no editor!

It'd be nice if I didn't have to scroll to the right before reading down the list, and it'd be nicer if the list was in order top to bottom rather than bottom to top (but I figure that's prolly impossible for blooger to deal with, innit?). Content very nice.

I agree with Grant about the layout but other than that I think your site's great.

Very clear, concise, and well written.

I look forward to reading more.

Hm. That's not the case when I look at it. I'm afraid my web-fu is not sufficient to know how to make it look decent in a wide variety of resolutions (assuming that's the case here).

And, you prefer chronological to reverse chronological? That's pretty easy to do, actually.

And, y'all are making me blush.
