I'm flying out tomorrow to visit a friend in San Fran. Besides the bridge, what's there to see? Besides the ... well, what's there to do?

Guide you? Could you be more specific? National parks? (John Muir Wilderness, scuba diving in kelp forests, Moneterey Bay Aqaurium not too far away.) Science museums? (Exploratorium) Art? (Man, I don't even know where to start.) Local color? (Chinatown, Castro, the pocket parks at the tops of some of those galactically expensive hills.) Good food? Practically everywhere. Bookstores? Again, I don't know where to start.

I recommend visiting City Lights, the incredible bookstore. Don't forget to look through the whole store -- there's an upstairs, downstairs, and back room in addition to the main area. They're publishers as well and their own catalog has such wonderful things as Juan Goytisolo and Rene Daumal.

If it's in your area, try a treat from Tart to Tart Bakery. The smell when you walk in the door makes you feel good before you even order. Unless you're vegan or allergic to gluten, I guess.

What kind of food do you like? What kinds of bars do you like? It's hard to go wrong; it's a very dense city.

Yeah, Chad, what's your pleasure?

If you're into museums, you've come to the right place. Check out the new DeYoung museum while you're here; this is the last weekend for the Hatshepsut exhibit. The DeYoung is right in Golden Gate Park, which you'll want to see anyway. The Exploratorium is also in the Park, and it's definitely worth a look even if you're not a 7-12 year old.

If modern art is groovy but you can't get to GG Park, go to SFMOMA, and Yerba Buena center and gardens right across from it. On the Yerba Buena gardens, also, is the Metreon, which should give you a well-earned, media-entertainment-filled respite from all that intellectual stuff.

There are tons of little bars and cafes around, and you can find pretty much any kind of cuisine you've always wanted to try. There are clubs too but shockingly I haven't explored those much.

While you're at City Lights, check out nearby Caffe Trieste (watch for yodeling Italians on that website). If you're a fan of the Beats, this was the place where the Beat Generation was born, essentially.

Wow thanks for the initial burst of suggestions! I'm flying out in an hour, and won't check this for a bit... Anyway, I'm going out to visit a friend who likes upper echelon types of things, but I'm more interested in the local color, idiosyncracies and just-cool-stuff. Mind, we're staying in the Castro, and ripping it up at some clubs: which reminds me, tell me some nice clean places for men to dance.
