The Spinto Band

Ok, so uh, anyone listening to these guys? Comin' at ya from Philly.

I saw them last night at Cargo (anybody else there?), they were pretty good I thought, one of the most energetic shows I've seen in a while, which was nice, kinda like that Arctic Monkeys clip where they all go crazy on stage, oh wait they don't move at all? Sorry my bad. Actually these guys did go crazy on stage, at one point bringing some people onstage to help them play the kazoo. Fun and chaotic.

To my ears, and depending which of their singers is singing, they sound like a mix of The Strokes, The Shins, Clap your Hands Say Yeah, and on one song, Lou Reed. So pretty much their own sound, and yeah it's pretty much, good ol' power pop. Some people seem to think they sound like The Flaming Lips, but I just don't hear the comparison.

My favourite tracks gotta be "Oh Mandy", "Brown Boxes", "Japan is an Island" and "Late".
As an encore, they played a superb rendition of Tommy James & the Shondells "I Think we're Alone Now", I hope they put that on some single somewhere.

Anyway the album out at the moment is Nice and Nicely done, I suppose anybody who is a fan of The Shins & CYHSY would dig 'em.

Why this works? It's power pop for Chris' sake, it works.

Only heard the track that's on the new Rough Trade Shops CD ('Direct To Helmet') and, yeah, liking it in a Shins kinda way. May well get the album from eMusic, once my downloads refresh, cos I can see how they could quite grow on me and be just right for when the sunshine returns...

I've just downloaded a few tracks- my first impressions are that this is very good and right up my street. Thanks for the recommend. More later...
