The rune poems seem pretty unrelenting about this rune as being rather negative. I've actually found the rune not to be so, but merely to be very focused. If you wield it with the proper intent then it will work with you well, if you are fuzzy in its use then it will wield you. I see it as the double-edge sword, and it can be used for defense as well as protection. Perhaps it can be seen as an example of how a sacrifice can be necessary in order to gain what we want. This rune can be a bit thirsty if you're not careful.

The sign of pure action, potency, and instinctual "will" devoid of self conciousness. The embodiment of directed cosmic force in the multiverse as a combination of polar energies projected in a straight line.
This form of raw power is held by the thurses (the giants) and is directed at the conciousness embodied in the aesir- However,the aesir are able to combat this power,and watch with might, through their defender, the warder of Asgardhr- The Mighty Thor.

Therefore, thurisaz is not only the rune of the thurses but also of the Thunder and it's God, Thor.This is due to their common origins as the result of the clash of polarized forces and also their common methods and motivations.Each is a reactive force.The thurses respond to the expansion of conciousness in the aesir, and Thor responds with Mjollnir to the resistance of the thurses.Thus a balance is achieved but a precarious balance.(3.1...)
Thurisaz is an assimilation of the potential energy contained in any two polarized extremes and the kinetic expression of them. Through this mystery the TH rune is alos the power of regeneration and fertility.It breaks down opposition and releases energy so that new beginnings can be made.To most,it is a source of stress,but to the few,it is a source of strength.
It is also a symbol not only of the phallus but also the whole psychosexual impulse to transform the self.
Fiery energy organized and directed,force and formation combined and directed.

Conflict. Combat. Meeting the challenge straight on. Where as Uruz represents a challenge overcome due to the increasing power and growth of the self, overcoming the challenge of Thurisaz requires diminishing the enemy instead. This is a rune of war and challenge, powerful energies of conflict and destruction. It must be wielded well with a harnessed will, rather than the wild untamed power of Uruz.

As well, it can break through any bonds upon the self, fighting to freedom, or be cast as protection against enemies, as Thor defends Asgard against the giants. It is a sign of sudden change through conflict and strife. Be sure it is wielded on your side.

The energy of Thurisaz is similar to the Chariot, in that opposing forces are bound under will to overcome obsticals.

The preeminent offensive rune. Best defense through a fucking armageddon like offense.

Raw and without focus this rune can blow up in your face like lighting gasoline.

Harnessed properly that same gasoline can make your internal combustion engine roar.

Here's an interesting one for you: Harness the power of Thurisaz with Uruz and it's like a sail (uruz) catching the power of the wind (thurisaz).

Upon ingestion of the rune and meditation on it, I see a shield.

How proactive is defense?
We often see defence as a passive 'thing', something that stands inate and solid, but is that really defence. Heimdal stands waiting by the Rainbow bridge, horn in hand to call to arms those who will defend Asgard. The deefnce of this realm is active, meeting the threat with equal power.

The dreams are of combat, and of superior tactics and cunning with which to stay alive and protect our land.

The rune is like a sword pointed out towards the world, able to penetrate any situation that blocks your path. Movement with this weapon must be measured lest you impale a loved one/stranger by accident. When unaware of ones actions, the sword can be pointed towards us, and any obstacle that blocks that path that is walked into will bring us pain and injury. Double bind or a wise philosophy?

Assertion, not keeping quiet, nullifying blows, rather than taking them on the chin.

Also comes from this power, a power of corruption. Humanity tested, not to succumb to the lower/base power. To beaware and to strengthen the mind to use this power wisely.

How easy it is to strike when one has the upper hand of knowledge/facts/intent. To use this power wisely and not to obliterate a challenger, when all that is necessary is a mutual agreement or a retreat. It would be too easy to become trollish, when our awareness is greater than our foe. Be Humanist not selfish.

Intense is the power, sharp and striking when called upon.

With more reflection, I note this rune stands betwen Uruz and Ansuz. Uruz: power of unconscious, Ansuz: communication and the "higher" conscious mind. Uruz: links to earth energy from below, Ansuz: opening connection to divine energy from above. Uruz: the roar of passion, Ansuz: the quiet of contemplation. Uruz: primal and bestial, Ansuz: clairity of sophistication.

Thurisaz stands between these, wielding both in the conflict between their duality. This is further represented by the > in Thurisaz placed half way along the stave (| which as Isa represents the self and will). Wunjo in comparison places > at the top, representing the highest mind. Thurisaz is a balance of the higher and lower, though an active dynamic one. As well, the fire of Kennaz < applied to the ice if Isa |. Dualities in conflict, focused for action. 1+1=3, the number of this rune.

Jordsvin links the thorn to volcanoes and to obsessive behavior. He also says it's dangerous to women -- I guess that's in the poems, too. I'm not sure what that would say about the "maleness" of this rune.
