Plans for World Domination. (This time, with proper thread summary!)

Before I go on to repeat everything I wrote as the thread summary of the last version of this thread, I want to apologize for the previous mistake. Always preview your post, people. I didn't, and now I look silly.

I just bought a copy of Samurai Swords, aka Shogun, from a friend of mine who owned it but never played it. GLEE! Reasons that it is cool:
1) your starting provinces are random based on a shuffle of the cards. Avoids the repetitive nature of Axis & Allies, where you have to deal with a certain historical lens each time.

2) you have the option of building castles and strongholds, which is a great feature for defensive tactics, though if your castled province is taken, then they get the castle...

3)Like Axis & Allies, different troops do different things, meaning you could stock up on archers or regular samurai, depending on preference, and thereby change the battle.

4)Ninja. (And ronin. Glee!)

The design is cool, the board is top-notch construction, and the plastic peices are remarkably detailed.

Anyone else played this? If so, tell me what your special loves or hates are for it.

Or if you want to talk about some other game, that would be okay too. (But dishonourable.)

Yep. I love it.

Might you perhaps find more strategy kindred here? Or here?

There are kindred in each of them, and at least on the board games one, I posted about Shogun just after you did. I think the difference for this thread, if it must be stated is that this is focused on the Diplomacy/Risk/Shogun/Axis & Allies/etc. genre of games, rather then everything from GO to Texas Hold'em.

Domination in at least implied military terms. Though a thrill is had in boxing in an opponent in chess, or out-placing them in GO, there is a particular, different, vicarious thrill in Lord of the Rings risk, where (for example) all of the sudden you have a huge army from cashing in cards, land taken, that sort of thing, and all of the sudden you storm from Minas Tirith right through to Mount Doom, and out the other side through the Black Gate. And you look up to see a shell-shocked opponent on the other side of the board. Or unexpectedly hiring ronin that tip the tide of a battle.

That's where, I hope, this thread will differ a little. In making people reminisce and discuss those times where fortune favoured the bold, or when the fates were against us. Or to brag, obviously. Maybe discuss tactics. But anyway.

By the way, in terms of your post on the Board Games, thread? Love Diplomacy as well. (I just can't find any players, these days!)
