Whilst looking for pictures of Battleship Potemkin for the "Nooooo!" thread, I found a site called Internet Archive where you can download the whole film!

There's heaps of other stuff there too. I've found M, The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari, The Man Who Knew Too Much, The General, Steamboat Bill Jr.... and I've only been through some of the site!

I don't know how good the quality is yet, its still downloading. Did anyone else know about this or any similar site where film nerds can get their fill?

old news
that site's been around for years

wonderful resource though, for both well known and unheard of films now in the public domain. some of the old esoteric 50s films on good hygeine and the atomic bomb and stuff are good for a laugh, as well.

as for similar sites, Public Domain Torrents has a ton of great movies available.

Well I did a search on barbelith and no-one had posted anything about it.

Cool, I'll check it out.

But Alex, it's old news because TeN knew about it years ago, and that's all that matters. Ever.

Oh I see. A recurring attitudinal problem then?

I thought I was stating the obvious, and this is a resource that appears as a default bookmark in every browser.

Cheers for clearing that up.

Well I'd certainly never heard of it, so cheers for the heads-up.

They've got all sorts of cool shit on there... and I've been meaning to pick up a copy of M for a while!

Thanks!

Hey, don't jump on me - I really had assumed that it was a commonly known resource, sorry if I was mistaken there.
It's not as if it bothers me that there's still threads being made about it... the more people that discover it the merrier. And I'm hoping people will post links to similar sites as well, I'd be very happy to find some.

yeah you just made it seem a little like

"errrr thats like been around for ever, are you that far out of the loop?"

so I assumed a thread had been made.

Anyway, I just got The Cabinet of Dr Caligari. Something to watch while I'm on holidays

I wonder what everyone else on the beach will think while I'm watching it on my laptop? Anti-social prat probably. I got the most ignorant comments when watching Battleship Potemkin at work yesterday. People just don't appreciate soviet propaganda films the way they used to....

It's a great site although I have problems downloading from it via a college network.
The Cabinet of Doctor Caligari's wonderful, it's one of those movies it should be mandatory to watch. Along with M, Fritz Lang's Scarlet St. is available to download too if you're interested in seeing how German Expressionism filtered into Film Noir.

This is a fantastic site. Finding stuff like this is why I joined barbelith in the first place. Anyway, don't know if you're having the same problems as me shrug in that here at college I can easily download the film but find it impossible to save on my hard drive. Is this to do eith my security settings, is there any way to circumvent this? Do I just have to alter my firewall settings or am I buggered and just have to watch it when it turns up?

Damned if I know Totem college security settings mean I can't even use something as innocuous as DC++ anymore, although I can still download the mpeg1 movies off archive. Try your college IT guys maybe? Or entice some Computer Science student to give it a look.

Ah well, guess I'm going to have to entice one of the poor chaps out of his RPG fuelled parallel universe into my den of German expressionism...well it will be as soon as I can save Caligari. What an incredible film, it's like being taken into a personal nightmare with your perspective flipped so unexpectedly at the end.

Anyway, off to rustle me up some compscis, the critters.

Anyone know of a site whereby I could download The Scarlet Empress? Both P2P and bit-torrentz software is unavailable to me on the network I'm using and it ain't on archive.
I'm not exactly asking anyone to find me the specific movie but does anyone know of any similarily noteworthy sites like www.archive.org that I could peruse?
