Exuma

This past week, a friend introduced me to the first two albums of Exuma, and since then I have been realizing that perhaps these are the greatest albums I have ever heard. They were both recorded in 1969 or 1970, I believe, but sound, in my opinion, amazingly futuristic. For those not familiar with Exuma, his music is a strange synthesis of Caribbean folk music, dub, soul, and voodoo ceremony. I have not ever heard anything like it.

Is anybody familiar with Exuma? Thoughts? I would also be curious as to where he fit in the music scene and culture at the time, and if there are any other artists inspired or similar to him.

Will investigate and get back to you...

not that this is really of any consequence to this thread, but you can certainly here the huge blues influence as well...like muddy waters if he was a carribean revolutionary possessed by Papa Ghede.

The first two Exuma albums are fantastic and are available on cd on Repertoire from Germany. Similar in tone to (and indeed, I believe pitched at the same audience as) Dr John's recordings of the same period.

There's an mp3 of "A Place Called Earth" here.

Wow.

"Place Called Earth" is fantastic, I'll have to look out more! Cheers for the link!

The Capoeirista in me finds comfort in the drums+big choruses combination. Exuma's voice is amazing! Sweet and rough at the same time. He's singing identifyable melodies but with a rasping grate like a Carribean heavy-metaller :-)

This brilliant! Just got the first two records. How had I never heard of Exuma before?!? Seems implausible to me. It sounds like Toots and the Maytals fired up on obeah.
