Right, I've been meaning to start this thread for a while but haven't managed to get it together, but I've got some time to spare, so here we are.
Has anyone else been reading any of Dan Slott's books? He first came to my attention with the new She-Hulk book. It was exactly what I'd been looking for: A super-hero comic that manages to take all the crazy stuff that made early marvel great mixed in with a wide knowledge of continuity (without being too po-faced) and well written characters, all done with a deft comic touch. I also loved Juan Bobillo's art, which matched the story perfectly, though I was less pleased with Paul Pelletier's work as I found it a little glossy for my tastes, but it's still good stuff. I was saddened but not surprised when it was cancelled, but perked up when I knew it would be back. That has now occurred, and continues to go from strength to strength.
In between that he did a Spiderman/Human Torch miniseries which used their relationship to examine the MU's history with real affection that just poured off the page. I reckon this was one of my favourite mini-series of 2005.
He also did the GLA and is currently working on The Thing, but I’ve gone on long enough, maybe this will get some conversation going, or maybe get you to check out some of his work.

Did you read the 100th issue of She-Hulk? It's a perfect summation of everything Dan Slott is awesome at: the continuity, the humour, and the fun without it being too cutesy.

I picked up that issue and I'd agree that it's a fine example of his excellent work on the series. You're right about the balancing act that he successfully pulls off.

Never finished it, but I'll have to track it down, as Ryan Sook was KILLING on it.

The miniseries was excellent through and through, Slott's work here wasn't anything like his more comedy-oriented Marvel work. (although there was a sense of fun in some scenes where Batgirl battled Tweedle-Dum in a small-scale city, as I recall - a la humans stomping on miniature train-sized cities in a Godzilla movie. Hell, even USING Tweedle-Dum was a bold move; there were some other examples of a dark sense of humor in the story and some new clever Batman villains created - one of whom was a graffiti artist)

And yes, Ryan Sook most definitely made his debut as Excellent Artist here.

It appears that Slott really got his big break over at DC writing the Timm/Dini Batman cartoon spin off comic before it got cancelled.
Thanks for the info on his Arkham Asylum mini-series, I'll have to see if I can pick it up next time I have some spare cash. It'll be interesting to see if he can pull off a more serious piece of work.

Did Slott make a Rocket Raccoon joke in the recent GLA minis? I feel like a Rocket Raccoon revival is coming and someone's gotta do it....remember that beautiful early Mignola art on the limited series back in the early 80s...?

She Hulk 6 out this week and I must rhetorically ask:
How fin good is this book?

Best issue of the new run I reckon, and they've all been reasonably strong.

Many many bits in this made me smile broadly...
Bit the first: Yet another introduction to a fun old marvel character (starfox) who i knew nothing about (i've always been more dc-orientated), but was really interested in after just one issue.
Bit the second: The Thing storming off shouting "That TEARS it!" Classic, oldskool comixx dialogue, but used in a way that's kind of believable for a particular character.
Bit the third: Awesome Andy's broken heart on the lh centre page. Genuine romantic interest has been a REAL strength on this book from way back.
Bit the fourth: On the very next page: 'Poke'. Great old-school captioning, intelligent little touches like that give the book a real sense of fun.
Bit the fifth: Andy and Mallory get together! See bit the third, and add a (;_

IMO these all typify what's good about Slott's work on this book

That's all

Finderwolf- It wasn't Tweedle Dum, it was Humpty-Dumpty (Humphry Dumfries, or something), who has an obsessive compulision to 'fix' anything that's broken- up to and including his dead grandmother, with shoelaces. I believe he joined The Society recently, I swear I saw him in Villains United as part of the strike-team that took down the Secret Six, though god only knows what good he could do against them (maybe he was a field medic).
It was a pretty good series IMHO- Joker was on top form (he wanted to go through the phonebook killing everybody whose name is a palindrome), the new characters felt at home (and I'm surprised nobody's used 'Great White' anywhere else), they had supernatural stuff (including Jason Blood/Etrigan) without it feeling out of place is what is nominally a crime book and Sook's art was as good as ever. It's in TP right now so give it a go.
