Nobodys mentioned ATP yet this year- but the line ups are looking pretty cool, and judging by the end of year favourite albums there may be a few other Barbelith folk that this interests

I've never been but i could be tempted this year- its certainly coming across more appealing than any other festival at the moment. Is it worth it? Obviously the bands are marvelous but how have you found previous events?

Shitting Crikey! Boredoms are here again. Shame it's the Sleater Kinney day, though they might play their own gigs around the same time, either way this sounds a lot better than I thought it would be...they kind of lost me after the last two Nightmare Before xmas' which again had sporadic spectacular moments but meh the rest.

Copey, do you really need to ask if ATP's good? You know Mac, Petey, myself and Fraely IRL and we've all given it the thumbs up. Do you not trust us? Do you actually hate us?

Also, look at the line up. If I'm not abroad, I'm bloody well going.

I've got my chalet for weekend 2, but still tempted to go to both... (I wanna see Vashti!)

Copey, if you've never been then this should be a perfect time to start. Hopefully it'll be warmer than the usual April weekends (and it can't be any colder than those chalets get in December...) Lots of people I know go for the atmosphere and socialising as well as or in spite of the music. Remember also: Pub til 5am and beach. It's great. Come!

I take back my previous meh-ness, it really is a wonderful place to go and see music and holy-moly it might actually be warm enough to go sit on the sand dunes and here the vibrations of whichever band you're too hungover to want to go sit in a sweaty room with. Dinosaur Jr and The Shins would also be shit hot, but after seeing Sunn O))) in the main hall in 2004 Boredoms is the only thing I could possibly hope to compare. Did I say I've been waiting to see them for ages...

You've never invited me nor told me about it- you shit!

And i don't know Petey IRL- or do I (?), why would i trust a bunch of beardys from Brighton? (joke) The only story i've heard is something about Fraily making lots of Coffee- which didn't really inspire me- too much and i get a migraine.

Anyway- i know that its all in shallets rather than camping and they have there own TV- tell me more, is it just a bunch of gigs or is it far more fun (which is what i'm hoping for...) Tell me about the good quirks that make it worthwhile, is it all music,is there comedy, movies? Dish the dirt!

I went back in 2002, and it was pretty good. Got in some 5-a-side, plenty of drinking, and of course plenty of gigging.

One cold day I decided I had to go for a swim (I had promised myself this). So while all my mates went to play minature golf, I went to the beach.
Managed to arrive at low tide, so I had to walk about half a mile to get to the water. Then directly after my (pretty damn cold) swim, it started to hail. Then I got hit by a sandstorm.

*Sigh*

Good times.

Sounds horrible.

Can anyone tell me whether that place is still as depressing as it was when I went there for a weekend of raving sixteen years ago?

It looked like a gulag, or something.

My experiences with ATP thus far have been almost universally fantastic, but then, it doesn't exactly take rocket sciene to cross reference the particulars of the event with my personality and establish that conclusion.

As with all festivals, the combination of heavy drinking/drugging and bad weather can result in a faintly apocalyptic vibe at times, but gulag or otherwise, at least at Camber Sands you've got a roof over your head and can get a decent night's sleep and a cup of fuckin coffee in the morning.

Being the geek I am, an ATP day usually consists of spending about 12 straight hours watching bands, 9 hours sleeping with about 3 hours left over for nutrition and misc. socialising, with the increasingly popular pass-time of Wreaking Drunken Havoc thankfully falling into the background (tho a post-midnight hoedown on the beach can be fun if the weather's nice).

For fellow msuic geeks considering going, I'll restate that one of my favourite things about ATP as compared to other festivals is the quality of the performance set-up itself - the sound-mix is usually excellent, the crowds are small enough for you to get a good position most of the time and basically yr watching bands who WANT to be there performing sets of a decent length to an appreciative audience.

I've got my tickets sorted out for both of the '06 weekends already I'm afraid... I've got a spare place for weekend 2, but for the moment I'm holding out for a couple of IRL friends to make up their minds before throwing it open to the internet.

I'm pretty stoked about the Weekend 1 line-up at the moment... where else is a single ticket gonna get you a chance to see the likes of Bert Jansch, Oneida, Watts Prophets and the Flesheaters over the course of three mere days? Yow.

That first weekend sounds shagging awesome, but I might have to go for the second as well, just 'cos of the Boredoms.

Sounds horrible.

Mm, yes, that was probably my most unhappy (and painful) point of the weekend. I didn't really like my mates, mates either, bunch of elitist music snobs, but if I still came away with a positive vibe about the entire experience, then that can only say something good about the music. Which was pretty damn awesome.

Can anyone tell me whether that place is still as depressing as it was when I went there for a weekend of raving sixteen years ago?

I remember it as being pretty bleak, especially at that time of the year. Yeah, if you like deserted, wind swept beaches, and slightly abandoned looking buildings, this is the place for you. Still, it is much more comfortable than a regular festival, you get a bed, a kitchen (albeit small) and a toilet and a shower! As Rizla said above, the crowds at each gig are quite small (like the venues) so the gig's end up feeling quite intimate. Granted you're not seeing massively well known bands, but If you're there, then you probably don't necessarily want to see them.

I suppose ATP feels less "wild" than your regular massive outdoor festival, but I suppose that is expected since there are less people there, and they are, on the most part, quite respectful of those around them.

I've never been to ATP, and I won't be going this year because the wallet just won't stretch. However I urge everyone who even has the slightest chance of affording it to GO SEE FUCKING BOREDOMS.

Not too long to go now. Anyone else coming...? Weekend 2 now with added Electrelane and Fiery Furnaces. Hoorah.

Just thought I'd point out the newly revealed Nightmare Before Christmas, curated by Thurston Moore. So far, Sonic Youth and Iggy & The Stooges are playing... We're ALL going to that, OK?

ATP are going to see me to the poor-house, I swear..

..but at least my ears will be happy and by that stage I'll hopefully be used to sitting around in the cold with socially inadequate bearded people, so who cares.

Whatever bunch of nonsense Thurston pulls out of the woodwork, I have no doubts that it'll be an absolutely stunning line-up... check back on previous ATP events and other stuff that he or Sonic Youth have been involved in putting together, and you'll note he has an almost mythical talent for assembling all the crazy and exciting new bands you want to see.... about six months before you know you want to see them.

I don't know if you missed all the publicity surrounding it Grant, but Jandek has actually played a few shows in the UK since his live debut in Glasgow eighteen months ago - he even did a short tour last year!

As someone who's more fond of his mysterious legend than I actually am of his music, I feel this is a bit of a shame on some level, but there you go.

ANYWAY, reason for posting is;

It seems I now have a spare ticket for ATP Weekend 2.

If any Barbelithers are interested, let me know: thingonthedoorstep (at) yahoo.com

I'm giving you a few days headstart on the rest of the internet.

Whilst we await the full low-down from Rizla on Weekend 1, I demand a roll-call of Barbeattendants for tomorrow. I invite whoever's coming to share a pint or two in the Queen Vic at some point over the weekend.

This here claims to be the running times for Weekend 2 (note: Lightning Bolt playing every day...!) with links to mp3s by every band, so pre-emptive planning ahoy...

Well weekend one went tremdously smoothly and was as enjoyable as you'd imagine..

It's worth noting that those 'leaked' schedules are pretty much official and - last week at least - more or less accurate down to the minute.

I daresay I'll be bumping into you Mike, and yeah, anyone else who's around - do say hello.

Should be a superb weekend!

rizla mission
14:25 / 23.05.06
Well that was another fine weekend, all things considered.

Although I've gotta say on a personal level I found the first weekend went a lot more smoothly than the second; unfortunate scheduling meant that this time round a lot of the bands I most wanted to see were squeezed together on Friday afternoon, meaning I missed half of them, plus suffered a series of minor disasters/disappointments (nearly losing glasses, faintng(!), unclaimed spare ticket, malfunctioning camera, lack of coffee or decent food, awful weather etc.), whereas Weekend One went like a dream and had me feelin' groovy throughout.

But still, can't complain; saw my fair share of awesome bands and had some good fun generally.

Highlights: Teenage Fanclub! Boredoms! Dead Meadow! Joanna Newsom! Gossip!

Full reviews of both will be weblogged literally as soon as I find time to write them; www.stereosanctity.blogspot.com

In the meantime;

Ooh, I picked up the keys to my chalet...

Mike Modular
18:19 / 23.05.06
Yes indeed, that was a fine time we had. Now suffering the post-ATP blues and severe arm ache from air hockey...

Musical highlight: ELECTRELANE! Really hit all the right buttons for me (maybe through familiarity with the songs, but mostly because they, well, rocked)

Runners up: Boredoms. I got well into the groove, but it dragged a little towards the end.

Otherwise, I didn't see quite as many bands as I'd have liked to (such is the lure of the pub/the price of all night partying) but Sleater-Kinney, Joanna Newsom (who can make Rizla swoon...), Teenage Fanclub and a rocked-up Fiery Furnaces played great sets and bits of Dinosaur Jr and Broken Social Scene were pretty good too. Missed Clinic and a couple of other downstairs acts as the room was often uncomfortably packed and humid.

Non-bandwise, ATP TV was another strong distraction (Trapped In The Closet, shown every day, astounded all who saw it - its influence could be felt across the weekend...) and there was even time to watch Doctor Who and see rabbits hopping outside the chalet.

If I were to draw a picture to sum up the weekend, it would be R. Kelly, in a cape*, not being able to watch Lightning Bolt because the room was full up.

Looking forward to Riz's write-ups (hopefully in the style of R. Kelly...)

(* Crazy man in cape amused/annoyed all who crossed his path. Um, you had to be there really)
