A friend of mine is going to be in Madrid from Jan 21 to Jan 28, will have her evenings free. She's never been, never even thought about going until this business trip came up....

What should she see/do, what should she avoid?

Mm, it's been a few years since I've been in Madrid, and also it's Winter now, so things may be a bit different.

In my experience the MadrileƱos tend to go out quite late, like, if they're going to a club then they'll only leave home at around midnight. Then return home around 7-8am This holds true for your more mature citizens too. You could feasibly do all of the below recommendations in one 12 hr period. Or you could break it up.

- going out for tapas
- visit the central plaza's (can't really remember the names) (usually tons of people about at the restaurants/bars)
- watching a traditional flamenco
- clubbing, there are tons of clubs in the centre, many many rumba/salsa/flamenco/ type places (which are rather fun and the trend (at least amongst the people I was with) seemed to be to buy sangria by the pitcher, per person)
- having chocolate y churros (for breakfast after an all-nighter)

If your friend had whole days to herself, then she might like to take in the Museums, visit the markets (El Rastro is pretty cool only happens on Sundays though), the Palace and perhaps El Retiro, otherwise I'd recommend a day trip out to Toledo or Segovia or Granada (for La Alhambra), all are pretty amazing.

Hope this helps?
