Getting rid of public e-mail addresses...

Right. So the problem we have with people getting into the board inopportunely is that some old trolls are using hotmail accounts on the board that have expired. They look for an account with a hotmail account, check to see if it's still being used and then if not, they register it as their own and get onto the board that way. It's very annoying, frankly. Very annoying indeed. As a consequence of another attack of this nature (this happens every few months), I've decided to make e-mail addresses invisible throughout the site. Sorry about this, guys. The private messaging system will still work as usual...

No worries, Tom... I've been meaning to but forgetting to take mine off anyway.

Kind of explains some of the phenomena we've been experiencing of late.

The glut of offensive posting and continual flouting of wiki-rules has seemed strangely concentrated recently. I put it down to young people getting computers for Christmas (or something) but the fact that it seems to be long-dormant suits reappearing rather than brand new members is increasingly suspicious.
If it ceases all this it can only be a good thing.

I think this is a good idea. I can't see why we really need people's email addresses on the site anyway.

That's a great idea -- wish I'd thought of it.

How'd you figure it out? (or is that classified?)

It's a fairly standard troll technique, grant.

Damn. Well, it's a good one.

I guess I'm just not a standard troll.

I suggest adding an option for e-mail notification of private messages as an alternative. We don't have this, already do we?

Something I've never understood the point of, that.

I had thought that someone might have gone off the habit of checking Barbelith, but was still willing to respond to PM's. I've had a couple of PM's based on threads or posts from years ago. I can understand not allowing this option for particular threads — either be a part of Barbelith or not — but private messages are a bit different.
