Having been given a career boost by Coldplay, of all people, during Live8 last year, it looks like Dicky A is on his way back in 2006. I'll confess to a certain amount of bias here - I saw The Verve on a couple of occasions (three, really,) before they reformed, and they were never anything less than excellent, I suppose one of my favourite memories, that I'm prepared to talk about, was watching them play The Music Box in Edinburgh, starting at about Eight. They were... disgusted's wrong word, but at least mildly depressed about the forty minutes they had to do their set, before the Salsa DJ came on. And attendant dancing class. Well, you can imagine.
'Sorry everyone,' the guy said 'We've got to be off-stage in forty fucking minutes because of Kid fucking Creole... But we're going to try and take you on a fucking journey, Edinburgh (there were maybe twenty people in the audience at this point,) we are going to fucking entertain you.'
Empty hyperbole for most bands, perhaps, but they really, really did. And as far as seeing pop combos live goes (The Shins, Ben Folds etc, Madonna, The Sex Gang Children, Raping Foetus On A Wheel, Pink Floyd, Pink, 5, Mortus, I Am Vs God and so on,) there's simply no competition.
But enough of my yakkin' -
Does Richard Ashcroft deserve another chance? |
