I mentioned this article a few days ago in a New Year's thread, but I felt that this needed a thread of it's own in the Comic Book forum, to properly give all of us Invisible's fans the opportunity to mix these intoxicating beverages, whereas in the other thread over in Conversation, you may never have seen it.
All of the following was done by Sequential Tart, by Anna Jellinek with assistance from Melanie Johnson. (So anytime they say "I" take note that it is not reference to Oddman.
In all cases, the vodka, champagne and mixers other than cordials work better in the cocktails if they are chilled. Other alcoholic ingredients and cordials can be served at room temperature. In some drinks, chilling the ingredients is an essential part of the recipe, and should be noted.
Sensitive Criminal
vodka
Cointreau
grapefruit juice
crème de cassis
fresh lime
ice cubes
martini glasses
Whatever quantities you make this drink with, you will need twice as much vodka as Cointreau, and equal amounts of grapefruit juice to vodka. Add a couple of splashes of crème de cassis and a squeeze of fresh lime. Shake all the ingredients with ice in a cocktail shaker and pour into martini glasses. Garnish with slices of lime.
I invented this after a party when I tried to mix a Cosmopolitan from memory and mixed up part of the recipe with the one for Planter's Punch. (To make that one, swap the crème de cassis for grenadine, and the grapefruit juice for cranberry juice. It's called Party Girl, in honour of where it was invented.) I experimented with those results and came up with this, which I decided to dedicate to one of my favourite women in comics, Lady Edith Manning. That's not a catchy cocktail name, though, so I named it after the Invisibles cell she drank cocktails with, instead. This in turn inspired me to invent cocktails for the other Invisibles, and here we are.
Lord Fanny
champagne
blue Curaçao
Pour Curaçao into champagne flute and top up with champagne.
A glamourpuss like Lord Fanny is, for me, forever associated with champagne, but that wasn't fun enough on its own, so I decided to add some colour. I thought of adding grenadine to make it a nice girly pink colour, but the extra alcoholic kick of the blue Curaçao had a bigger appeal, in the end.
King Mob
chilled Blavod black vodka
chrome coloured shot glass
Simple recipe this one: pour the vodka into the shot glass.
This one was invented by my fellow Tart, Melanie Johnson, whilst drinking beer in Amsterdam. For both of us, King Mob is forever associated with black clothes and silver piercings. Hence this drink, invented purely for colour-scheme!
Mister Six
raspberry vodka
gin
tonic
ice cubesParfait glass
pink plastic swizzle stick in the shape of a nude girly
First of all, for this drink, you will need to infuse the raspberry vodka. This is a lot easier than people think: Simply add some raspberries to your vodka, and leave to steep for a week. You can use fresh or canned raspberries. Remember that canned raspberries usually come in light syrup, but this can be added to the vodka to enhance the raspberry flavour. If you find that your resulting raspberry vodka is too sweet, it's easier to add more vodka, rather than if you find that it doesn't taste strongly enough of raspberries. Don't forget to strain the vodka before pouring (the vodka-sodden raspberries are messy, but delicious, and shouldn't be wasted.). It should be a gloriously kitsch dark pink colour -- could a drink of another colour really do a character like Mister Six any justice?
To make the cocktail, mix equal amounts of raspberry vodka and gin with ice in a cocktail shaker. Pour into a Parfait glass (that's like a Collins glass with a short stem, kids) and top up with tonic. The nude girly swizzle stick is a highly important accessory, because, let's face it, Mister Six wouldn't be seen with anything else if he could help it, and it must be pink to match the colour of the cocktail.
Harlequinade
gin
Cachaca
blue Curaçao
lemonade
ice cubes
highball glass
mirrored swizzle stick
This one needs equal amounts of gin and Cachaca, with enough blue Curaçao to turn the drink a groovy colour. Shake these ingredients in cocktail shaker with ice cubes, then pour into highball glass and top up with lemonade. Accessorise with a mirrored swizzle stick. The Cachaca is inspired by the Rio Carnival and the mirrored swizzle stick is inspired by a Harlequinesque carnival costume seen in Amsterdam's Tropenmuseum.
Jolly Roger
strong rum
tequila
cola
grenadine
skull-shaped ice cubes or drinks-coolers
highball glass
Pour equal amounts of rum and tequila to taste into cocktail shaker, add a dash of grenadine. Shake with ice cubes and pour into highball glass. Top up with cola. The rum is for the obvious pirate connection, the tequila is to get you good 'n' drunk 'n' mad. The cola and grenadine are to make it a little more drinkable, and the glass is a no-nonsense container, as befits a straight-talking woman like Jolly Roger. The skull-shaped ice cubes or drinks-coolers are to add an element of fun to the drink.
Jim Crow
the "cheapest, nastiest rum you can find"
Blavod black vodka
orange juice
ice cubes
old-fashioned glass
Pour the rum, vodka and orange juice onto ice cubes in an old-fashioned glass. The "cheapest, nastiest rum you can find" is Jim Crow's professed favourite for bringing on Papa Ghuedé, the voudoun loa. The orange juice mixed with the black vodka turns the drink a delightfully nauseating shade of green. I think the Crow-man would approve. Ke-ke-ke.
Dane
According to Melanie, Dane's cocktail would be a can of cheap beer. I would add an ecstasy tablet for the definitive Dane, myself.
Jack Frost
chilled vodka
mint schnapps
Schweppes mint cordial
soda
ice cubes
fresh mint
Collins glass
This has proportionally about a third more vodka to mint schnapps, or to taste if you prefer. Add alcohol to a cocktail shaker with some ice and a dash of Schweppes mint cordial. Shake, pour into Collins glass and top with soda. Garnish with fresh mint. Something cool and classy for the man who may be our saviour.
Mason Lang
cognac
Grand Marnier
champagne
small Mason glass or old-fashioned glass
Pour all the ingredients into a small Mason glass (one of those square glasses, they sometimes come with handles) or an old-fashioned glass.
I'll confess that I haven't yet tried this one, but when thinking about cocktails for billionaire Mason Lang, the first important thing was that it should be expensive. Cognac seemed a likely choice. There are already cocktails featuring cognac and Grand Marnier, which compliment each other nicely. Whilst browsing on the 'net, I came across a recipe featuring cognac and champagne, and figured this would be expensive enough for Mr Lang. The fact that both ingredients are rarely found together in a cocktail only increases the exclusivity of the drink, something which Mason would no doubt appreciate.
Ragged Robin
champagne
rasberry vodka
grenadine
fresh raspberries
champagne flute
Place raspberries in the bottom of a champagne flute, and pour in raspberry vodka. Add a splash of grenadine and top with champagne.
Knowing how fond Ragged Robin is of Smart Drinks, I was tempted to concoct something of that nature, but unfortunately, I know nothing of Smart Drinks. But I do know she enjoys a glass of champagne or three, so I came up with this one, which comes with a nice fruity flavour and a nice red colour to match the rosy circles on her cheeks.
Helga
Absolut Kurant vodka
crème de cassis
blackcurrant schnapps
Schweppes Russchian
ice cubes
martini glass
Mix a good amount of vodka, a couple of splashes of schnapps and a splash of crème de cassis with some ice cubes in a cocktail shaker. Pour into martini glass and top with Schweppes Russchian. This has a Scandinavian/east European flavour to honour Helga's roots. The blackcurrant flavour and colour is to compliment the pink of Mister Six cocktail, of course.
John A'Dreams
Bailey's Irish Cream
cognac
cream
old-fashioned glass
Pour cognac into an old-fashioned glass and top up with Bailey's and fresh cream. A smooth, pale drink that slips down easily, but has a bit of bite, just like everybody's favourite ambiguous white-suited man.
Barbelith
Smirnoff lemon/lime vodka
cranberry juice
Sprite or 7-Up
ice cubes
lime wedges
martini glasses
Mix vodka and cranberry juice in a cocktail shaker with ice and a squeeze of fresh lime. Pour into martini glasses and top up with Sprite or 7-Up, garnish with lime wedge. A red-and-green theme for the red-and-green planet. |
