My first post here: Can anyone answer a few basic questions about sigils to a newbie?

Hello. My name is Sypha Nadon and this is my first post here. I'm not new to online forums, in fact I participate in quite a few. But I've never posted here until now. I discovered this place through The Bomb website (of course). I won't bore you with my life details, but I am a male college student, 21, an officer for my campus gay/straight Alliance, English major. I like to read, write, draw, and listen to music(especially industrial/electronic music). I hope to one day be a writer. My favorite writers are William S. Burroughs, Poppy Z. Brite, Neil Gaiman, Grant Morrison, Marquis DeSade, William Shakespeare, and assorted others.

Recently I've become very interested in the idea of sigils. My first interest was when I read how the Temple ov Psychic Youth used them (I'm a big fan of Genesis P-Orridge of Throbbing Gristle fame). Recently I began reading "The Invisibles" and I went to Grant Morrison's website and read "Pop Magic". I think I might like to try using a sigil one day.

But my question is: Is charging & launching a sigil considered to be a ritual? Does one have to do banishing first and, if so, how? Are there any serious negative consequences to launching a sigil I should know of? And do they actually work?

Forgive me if I sound naieve, but I am new to all this. Magic has fascinated me all my life and I would like to try something like this. If you have any pointers for a newbie I would be most graceful.

From what I've picked up from other posts, the most common problems with sigils seems to be

1. that people either have trouble *not* thinking about it, and consequently, it doesn't work
2. that the sigil works according to the letter of its program, but to such a weak extent that the spirit is lost.

I don't know if any of us have had 100% success with these things. For me, they seem to never work, even if I forget about them. But don't let that discourage you. Try it out, and be sure to keep a journal. Don't discount results.

I'm not really the one to answer questions on magic, I'm just a girl who's about to have her second night of insomnia in a row [and compulsively editing for subject-verb agreement]... but anyway I've been reading Condensed Chaos by Phil Hine, and I'm finding it to be a good introductory text that covers sigils.

Like it says in Condensed Chaos, make sure you do everything you can to help the sigil succeed. If you want that hot girl in your english class to jump your bones, don't just sit around after making a sigil and hope she'll come over, rip off all her clothes, and fulfill your every perverted desire. It won't happen. I think the problem I had with sigils was that I tried to sigilize for things a bit too far out of my reach. Go for little things at first like "I will see a dog with a pink collar".

What's the point?

No point really, but I don't often see dogs with pink collars around here, so if I charged a sigil with that particular intent, I'd know it worked. I'm just suggesting don't start big because if you start big and the sigil doesn't work you may be disappointed and give up.

Sigilisation is not really ritual, but if throwing a little theatricality into the mix helps you drum up a good charge, go for it.

Tri's 'dog with pink collar' concept is an excellent idea. Magic got going for me when I started telling everything to be exactly as it already was. Your brain gets used to success, you get used to not agonising over outcomes, it starts to be natural to see your stuff working, and you get a good flow going. (I've also used this to recharge Gek when ze was looking a little pale and transparent one day- seemed to work really well for hir too, but then ze is programmed to thrive on success.)

Sigilise for a sunrise sometime and then sit back and enjoy.

The best way to succeed at magick is to know fuck all about it.

Stop asking questions and go DO things
