I'll start, then.
I got a minister's robe, the new Paul McCartney CD, and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy Tertiary edition - sort of radio thing, creatively wrapped to look like a robe with a towel slung over the shoulder. No tears on these, but let's hear it from the rest of you.

Some cash, a Ramones book that I already had (so I let my brother have it), a pretty smart Captain America t-shirt (I'm not a particularly big fan of Cap, but a t-shirt with a Jack Kirby picture on it can only be good), not too much else...

Ohh, I got a big fluffy bathrobe, with a hood so I can pretend to be a ghost/boxer/superhero (the Spectre or something) when I'm wet and cold. DVD's of Sin City, The Day Today and Master and Commander. A football trivia game. Keyane West's second album. A really nice cashmere jumper. A really nice scarf. A tee-shirt (plane white) and two shirts and cufflinks, one shirt white, one pink and blue. Balzac's Black Sheep. Doom Patrol book 3. A rat-pack DVD. Some liquorice tea. A good haul.

My lovely girlfriend got me the disinfo Invisibles guide, which I'm slowly working through, and a harmonica. Also got a rubiks cube (aarrrgh!!) and a venus flytrap, a Desaparecidos CD, some PKD... very good year in all.

My g/f cried watch Charlie and the Chocolate factory (so did I actually, damn that little kid), which I bought her, so technically I did make her cry. Yay me!

Good Gord, it's cool.

wristwatch
jeans
perfume
camera
gift cert to spa
gift cert to CostCo
makeup bag with photo of bf on it
small gold coin
santoku
saffron

I really like them all, but the santoku is the most useful, and the camera is the most meaningful. The best gift I gave out was a 15 minute video I made for my mother in law of footage my bf shot in Singapore a few years ago of her niece's wedding.

This year I got...

Food poisoning.

Yep, I spent most of Christmas day either throwing up or glued to the loo seat.

Worst.
Christmas.

Quite a haul..

Moonfrog, I hear you. Last year on Christmas night I got a rash that covered my entire face and upper body. Not as bad as food poisoning but it lasted for 2 weeks.

This year I got socks. Thick ones.

Uh, the Æon Flux animated series DVD set. Margaret Atwood's new book, The Penelopiad a retelling of the Odyssey from Penelope's perspective. An anthology of the "Fifty Greatest Short Stories" (hah), with Shirley Jackson's "The Lottery" therein. One of my dad's photographs put on a wooden hanging thing. 75 dollar bookstore gift certificate. Plastic magnetic fridge alphabet. A big-ass duvet. Not a bad haul, all told.

I did alright myself, but it was my son who got the best gift (from his Baba): sheet music of a song ("You're Different") from his favorite movie (Mad Monster Party? 1967) signed by Phyllis Diller, who voiced The Monster's Mate. Speechless. How does she (Baba) do it?

Actually, yes, I did (inadvertantly) make someone else cry - my g/f's 4 yr old nephew. His eyes lit up on xmas eve when she arrived at her sister's, the evil Lord Vladek's lego castle in tow. How it must have stung when she told him it was for me.

Hah!

Eat that, kid!

How I hate kids.....

Reminds me of a similar experience I once had.

My parents had given me a similar castle (enormous with a huge dungeon). A couple of days later I´m at my aunt´s, and she presents me with the same castle as a present. And you know how truthful children can be. "Oh, I already got one of these!", I commented innocently. Resulting in a glare from my aunt, and (I´m pretty sure) a big Schadenfreude grin from my father.

I got a ticket for the Electric Picnic! It's a new festival in Ireland, the first year it's 3 days. It's based on Glastonbury (it even has Lost Vagueness) and last year it was headlined by Nick Cave, the Flaming Lips and Kraftwerk. They haven't confirmed the line up yet but after last year I recon it's going to be Mogwai and the Super Furries.
Sweet.

Hmm. It must be true what the clerk said, that adult males still like playing with lego. This Christmas, I got my godson a NBA lego set. While wandering in the store amidst other harried shoppers, I looked for the damn lego section in vain. Finally, fed up, I spotted a clerk, asked for directions and ended up chatting with the clerk about lego. Turns out that the clerk's roommates, both who are in their early 20s, still loving playing with lego. He came home one night to find both roomies making a house out of lego blocks on the kitchen floor.

Anyway, I got a good haul this year.

From my family:

-a bottle of haberno hot sauce, which looks evil and vile, and incredibly potent, and which will probably sear my tastebuds right off my tongue

-a decorative red glass bowl with lovely christmasy scented pot-pourri

-magnets for my magnet collection

-artisan style purses from Panama

-a lamp

-a large and very lovely jewelry armoire

-a book on gems and jewelry

-a dvd stand

-and (drum roll, please) dvds of seasons 4, 5, and 6 of Buffy The Vampire Slayer! Yay! Next to the armoire, this is by far my favorite gift. I already have seasons 1-3, so now all I have to get is season 7. I'm happily watching season 4 and enjoying the buffster in her heyday. I still crack up and tear up watching these little gems. In the wee hours of this morning, near dawn, I watched the ep, 'New Moon Rising' and I got heartsick all over again for Willow, Tara, and Oz as they resolved their love triangle.

From my colleagues:

-a box of fancy swiss chocolate cookies

-a big bag of chocolate pistachio biscotti

-a small potted plant

-a scent candle pillar

-a cute snow globe diorama

-a small box of fancy belgian chocolates

-a set of Lancome make-up brushes

-a gift certificate to a spa

These gifts from my co-workers were lovely and completely unexpected. The last two years, I had given small gifts of toilettries and homemade cookies to some of my co-workers. I did't get- or expect - anything in return. This year, due to heavy spending on my part, I decided to not get anybody anything, thinking it was unnecessary as that on the whole, I get along well with my colleagues and that gifts though nice were not indicative of our friendly work relationship. Fuck, was I wrong. Christmas eve day rolls around, and I'm inundated with presents and I feel (and probably look) like fucking Scrooge Mcduck because I hadn't gotten anybody any gifts at all! To rectify the situation, I dashed into my office, went online and ordered some nice items from ebay for some of my colleagues. I'm not getting gifts for some of the others, not because I don't like them, but because their gifts to me, though very nice, were small tokens of appreciation. These colleagues are Account Mgrs and they make my life hell for the other 364 days of the year. I figure I'm due for some presents and some appreciation from them!

Brilliant gift from lovely partner - there were four packages, numbered, and I was told there was a theme: Package one contained a psychotherapy book I've been after: Body Psychotherapy by Tree Staunton. Package two contained a novel A Short History of Tractors in Ukraine, (went to Ukraine a few years ago). Package three contained a beautifully bound and decorated notebook for me to chart my psychotherapy training. Package four was a guide to the second hand book capitol of the UK, Hay-on-Wye, with a specially designed just-for-me voucher for an all expenses paid trip to said book heaven, including a free book!!! The best gift I've received for a very long time.....
