Hypersigil, alters and other stuff

so, ive been gone for a while, and read through the hypersigil thread and everyone agreed using an alter to a current or forgotten god would be a good idea.
this got me thinking
if say, an alter to Ganesh would work, what about john the baptist?
perhaps an alter to moses would be good in creating a hypersigil involving travel...

mainly what i am getting at, as i stare at the pale gree cubicle walls, is if i think a god would be a good one for a current project, does that mean it will likely work, whether someone else agrees?
and if that is the case, then why not skip the god part (not much for authority figures) and move on to the thou art god (or ArtGod for the eXisteNz crowd) philosophy of things.
I have been collecting pictures of me from over the years in an attempt to create an alter to myself. I know it sounds narcissistic (sic?) but if focusin your energy to "speak" with a fictional diety possibly based on an acient secret reality, why not focus on yourself to get the goals you want?

sorry if that was long winded and had no discernable ending, but like i said im at work

A couple people here might tell you that the gods exist independently of you. I personally have not seen enough to say for sure.

In any case, I don't see why building an altar to yourself wouldn't be an effective form of magic. You may as well try it and see what happens. But I would imagine the effect would be different that working with another god, whether or not they exist independently.

Let us know your results on self-worship.

They say Odin became a god because he sacrificed himself to himself.

Think in that vein when you altar yourself.

I'd assume that it hasn't been widely performed because of the psychological implications with worshiping yourself.

Most people's self-esteem won't allow it to work 100%, and for those who love themselves enough to build a shrine in their own name are probably battling egomania or leading religious wars in some unpronounceable country.

It sounds like an excellent experiment though. The idea of each person being a god is pretty well known, but I'd never considered "worshipping" myself.

In the name of Me, Praise Me! Hail Me!

Speaking of hypersigils check out the gorgeous one floating around in the Comics section. It's quite the head fuck.

It is a pretty cool hypersigil.

Also, not to nitpick (ok ok... I AM nitpicking) Odhinn gained the knowledge of the *runes* from sacrificing himself to himself.

He was a god from birth, helped create the nine worlds, fought in the Aesir-Vanir war, plucked out his eye at the well of Mimir (Mimir's head's presence there being a result of the diplomatic fallout from that war) before hanging from Yggdrasil and claiming the runes.

Nearly a decade ago, I put the finishing touches on a sigel that means simply, "me". I wanted to craft a symbol to wear and use, like a cross or penticle, but which represented me and what I stood for, rather than a diety or organization. This was before I understood what a sigel was, mind you, or read about similar exercises in ceremonial magic.

Results? Yes. Its a powerful tool for magick, for focus and as a sympathetic link. It also has talismantic uses as personal protection and the like, and over the years my use of it has caused many people to associate it with myself. It is rather a form of self worship, and intentional hubris But its worked well for me and my development. I haven't gone so far as to set up an altar to me, the talisman is enough of that sort of thing, but from my results I suspect it would work out well if you need personal strengthing.

Just repeating one version of the odhinn myth. The version holds that he was once a king and that through his magical acts became god.

It is a good example. Even if it isn't orthodox.

I'm still on the waiting list for Minor Deity status. My ticket says I'm number 503,004,899,001; even the giant newts got seen before me. Oh, well.
