A Deviant Gallery

So. I've had an account on deviantART for some time now (well, two actually, or rather three, but this is all messy and incidental). Mostly for photo-postage. The issue being I'm not into it so much for the OMG COOL comments as much as, hopefully, a helpful analysis of my photos, and properly built criticism, that might actually help me become... better. Because while I don't doubt that the gallery is as it is rather poor, I would like to eventually develop into a proper photographer.

So, this is my request to those potentially interested for some thoughts on the photos found there, and what potential improvements I should aim for (texts = ignorable).

I think this is one of your best ones:

It's a really nice composition, particularly with the close attention to the small grid at the bottom. A small grid on it's own would be interesting, but you've gone further and added the sky in as well, creating this contrast: that's good.

The greyscale is good: really brings out the texture of the wall and the grid. I like how we see that progression form white sky, to grey wall, to black holes.

I think that of your other work, the strongest images are the ones where you combine night-time darkness with electric light and a deserted street. I think this is a really interesting area to work in: a supposedly inhabited space when it is uninhabited.

If I were you I'd try and get some free nights where you can go and photograph everything in that environment: not just streetlights but trees, insects etc. Try taking regular snapshots as you would during the day, but take them at night.

I thought it'd be wiser to place some pics here directly, but then I realized I wouldn't really be able to figure out which criteria to apply to choosing the ones I did. Hence going for the not-so-pratical approach of providing the link to the "gallery"...

Again with the thanking for your thoughts; both for expressing them and, well, for the fact they're positive ones as far as at least a portion of the photos go. I'm glad you like this one and moreso that you've expressed why: this is precisely what's missing at deviantART; either there are no responses, since I'm not exactly big, cough, or simple "I like this" comments. Hence some analysis is greatly appreciated and precisely what I was trying to get through this thread.

Your suggestion about night-shots is interesting... both photos taken at night, namely

have so far gotten fairly favorable responses, and are two that I do rather like myself...

So, that is indeed an idea to consider, which hadn't come up at all... As soon as I have the time and the health (currently ill in nasty tummy yuckyness way), I might just try and do as you suggest.

I like how you've got the bench in silhouette on the last picture. I think that's a good effect and you could do some interesting things by repeating it with people or animals.
