Aquaman: Sword of Atlantis

I've always felt like Aquaman was the most under utilized and unappreciated character of the DC Universe. He should be a character on par with Morrison's Animal Man or Moore's Swamp Thing if somebody would just do it right.

I really haven't been that impressed with the various attempts to revamp or revitalize him. But this one... this one sounds pretty damn intriguing. And I'm not sure why. The Conan Of The Sea has been trotted out before, only to crumble after a few issues.

But something about this pitch sounds grander, more an attempt to reach for mystery of the depths of the ocean. Maybe because it's a new Aquaman, free of the continuity rat's nest that's been strapped to Arthur Curry/Orin.

Probably wishful thinking on my part but still...

As part of DC’s “One Year Later” event, Busiek and Guice will helm an all-new take on one of the mainstays of the DCU, and the creators and DC say “all-new,” they mean it.

The writer explained this new take on Aquaman will be more of a high-fantasy adventure book … “with swords, wizards, exotic locales, wars, monsters, ancient gods and more, all taking advantage of that undersea setting that makes the seascape practically an alien world, full of mystery and wonder,” Busiek said.

”But it's not just swords & sorcery,” he continued. “There's also science, corporate skullduggery and the occasional superhero in the mix. Think of it as sword & sorcery if the next kingdom over is a fully-industrialized hi-tech nation with tanks and guns and worse ... boards of directors.”

Before Busiek goes too far, however, one thing he wanted to reveal upfront (“I should rip the Band-Aid off fast for longtime Aqua-fans”), is that this Aquaman stars a “new guy” … a new Aquaman.

”So in that sense, it's the start of something brand-new -- a new hero, setting out on new adventures.”

What's everyone's take on Aquaman? Is he just a character that's best left in the trash bin of DC's pantheon or a neglected one with heaps of potential? What are you favorite Aquaman issues/takes?

I never understood why everyone apparently hated Aquaman, or why the book wasn't as great as it should be. I mean, it's Aquaman! In my head, it writes itself. Arthurian fantasy with goofy 60's pop elements and some superhero sci-fi. It's really not that hard. In fact, Busiek's pitch is quite similar to the direction I would've went in (only I'd use Arthur in my Arthurian fantasy, and make it a bit more go-go-check-y), so I'm going to go hide my brain waves from DC now.

I'll try it out, but I don't know if Aquaman will work as a 'legacy hero.'

You mean "in Jack Fear's head."

I see this move as being a smart reaction to the success of Justice League, and its portrayal of Aquaman.

I like it. When you get down to it, The character of Aquaman has always been less interesting than the setting. By changing the P.O.V., Kurt can explore the undersea environment, and how it interacts with the surface world, without having to deal with the vicious cycle plotlines the character has been trapped in.

It's funny you say the character is less interesting than the setting.

Cause neither have been used to their true potential.

Arthur, heh, is the ancestral ruler of an underwater society that is both technologically advanced and utterly fantastic. Atlantis is, by legend, the crux of trade in the ancient world. It ought to be a potpourri of Middle Eastern and Mediterranean cultures, complete with weird traditions, class struggle, and religious warfare. Judging by cultural development in the surface world, the Atlantean world should be widespread and wildly different, not to mention having something of a pluralist and vegetarian worldview. And along comes this blond guy who was raised on some remote western beach saying he's the rightful King of The Oceans. Hilarity, and bloodshed, ensues!

I like the sound of this direction a lot - I kind of wish it wasn't a new guy, but maybe Busiek's new Aquadude will win me over. And I'm glad to hear that Arthur/Orin will still be a part of it.

This sounds quite fun, actually. To be honest, I think (especially if they're going the S&S route) the setting'll be what makes or breaks it.

Like the sound of it. Enjoy Astro City. Will buy it.

Wow... I like the current run and still think this is the right direction.

That said if this don't work, please kill him.

As good as any other place to put this:

There's a trailer for the new TV show online.

Keywords that make me happy:

* Bermuda Triangle
* Atlantis researchers
* Unless my eyes deceive me, brief glimpses of a boat named Quint (groan) and Lou Diamond Phillips in uniform.
* Lighthouse keeper (and Atlantean exile) Ving Rhames.

Plus, young Orrin says he can swim as fast as a cigarette boat (and appears to be being chased by jet fighters at one point).

My sources indicate that it may be a victim of the WB/UPN merger.

The show is dead in the water, yes.

As for Busiek's Sword of Atlantis, I found it kinda dull. I might give it one more issue before I give up.

It's on it's 3rd or 4th issue so far.

I'm still kind of liking it in a pulpy sort of way. The recent issue was neat in its re-introduction of THE SEA DEVILS and it's ideas about a post atlantis DCU.

it does need to pick up the pace a bit though.
