Which Comics for Christmas?

Ninjas make great pets

So. I've decided it's time to hook in my other brothers. I've got one.. started with preacher and moved up from there. (figured best place as he's into smoke, drink and slightly dark humour).

so What do you recommend for these guys?

Next lil bro N: is footie fan and electrians apprentice. He likes 'bloke' stuff. I'm kinda stumped here.

Lil'er bro J: out of kids school but still young. Very intelligent with a sideways veiw of things. I think he'd enjoy something with lots of art detail to hold his attention

I'm guessing middle Brother might enjoy Hate, tales of slacker life, dating and sex... or Maybe Minimum Wage, which covers a similar subject area but with the main charcter as a budding comics artist...

A general recommendation would go to Squee, which contains two 5 page strips that will raise a smile from almost anyone... Squee is like the Tim Burton Calvin and Hobbes, but its the meanwhile strips that really make the Squee collection so much fun.

But, Yeah thumbninja - can you give us a better idea of other things your brothers like? books, films, TV and things...

If we're talking Calvin and Hobbes, why not Calvin and Hobbes?

STOATIE LIEKS CHOCOLATE MILK
10:51 / 10.12.05
I'd second Squee... is middle bro into horror stuff at all? The Walking Dead would be a good choice if so... it's also kind of impossible to read the first one without wanting to go out and get the rest, so if you're wanting to get him hooked it could be pretty cool...

Alex's Grandma
19:34 / 10.12.05
For the youngest, The Enigma. It may warp his fragile little mind, but is it ever too early?

I'm guessing it's out of print now, but, if you order it direct (well, via Amazon anyway,) from Duncan Fegredo, who drew it, and is a very nice man, he'll throw in a signed sketch free of charge. Plus you get to chat to him via e-mail, which personally anyway, if rather pathetically, I did find a bit of a swingball moment.

Tim Tempest
02:44 / 11.12.05
Ultimate Spider-Man I would always reccomend for teens. I can still relate to Spidey, because he's been 16 since I was 12, so we've had some time to bond.

Mister Six, whom all the girls
18:13 / 11.12.05
That Superman Showcase collection for the lil tyke, perhaps. Or maybe even Ballad of Halo Jones if you want to bend his head a little.

For a big old twist, go straight for Seaguy.

For the bloke? Alec by Eddie Campbell.

The Natural Way
10:28 / 12.12.05
Eddie Campbell? For a blokey-bloke? I don't think so. Get him the Ultimates. Really. The amount of non-comics reading, good old boys I've loaned my copies out to.... It's an action movie on a page with lots of hard men. One for the geezers.

Ninjas make great pets
10:45 / 12.12.05
I've read bits of squee. I was bought 'bear' which I fell in love with! thats not a bad idea.

Enigma good thinking. lots of oddness. maybe shade the changing man instead. (yes duncan is lovely, met him at a comic fair sign/sketch and he was just a sweetheart!).

Had thought smax. then figured too girly. so maybe top ten for te younger bro.

TV wise. the middle bro likes football football football. and drink. the youngest liked pokemon but he's a bit older now so I no longer know. Console games I suppose.

all help much appreciated!

oh. just noticed. 'the ballad of halo jones'. Brilliant idea! that just might work for the younger one (whom, I've just remembered, loves building robots).

Well I believe there might be collections of STRIKER the Sun's footie strip, but I don't know any of the details...

Enigma's a terrific choice and a complete story. The first eight issues of Shade are probably the weakest and you can't get much further than that as there are no trades.

You can't go wrong with Watchmen or The Invisibles.

Have you read them, sleaze? Pyongyang and Black Hole look pretty interesting, just interested in getting a second opinion...

okay then, what about teenage girls?

i've two stepsisters that i'd like to find good comics for. I was thinking some sort of introspective and relationshippy indie type book. but that's a little outside my bubble.

one's a serious/smart type just starting college. the other's in high school and into a weird combination of top-40 hip hop and marylin manson.

maybe wet moon? i like it, but i'm old, what the fuck do i know?

Persephone

What about Ghost World for college-age girl?

Maybe I should get We3, but will I cry...

i got we3 for my pet loving hipster friend, which went over really well.

ghost world sounds like a good idea. is there a specific book or trade that would be a good gift?

Persepolis might also be a good present... for anyone really...

Persepolis and Sandman are generally highly rated by the lassies. The former is a good call for any western young woman.

I just wish that P2 was a little better...

I don't know about any particular edition of Ghost World. I think I have the one that was published when the movie came out.

Maybe Peanut Butter And Jeremy's Best Book Ever by James Kochalka for the younger? Not all of Kochalka's stuff is suitable for youngsters, though.

Persephone

I like Sandman. I also like Lucifer --but maybe not that for Christmas, right?

Blankets, Jimmy Corrigan: Smartest Kid in the World and The Buddy Bradley Stories

Some recommendations for none superhero comics

Some reviews from Comics Should Be Good.
I haven't read any of them apart from Goodbye, Chunky Rice. A very sweet and melancholy experience.

I didn't get as much out of Blankets as I did outr of Goodbye Chunky Rice, but then again I have a feeling that you really needed to grow up in the Midwest United States with quite religious Christians to appreciate Blankets to the full...

thanks for the advice everyone.

now, it's beguiling time!
