I know we don’t have much success talking about theatre here, but I saw Heroes last night, and have some hope that a few others will have seen it too. It’s talked about as the new Art (little-known French play adapted for the west end by a famous British playwright; same producer; same theatre; same format; some of the same cast…), and, frankly, if a play is pop enough for me to go along then there’s a good chance that you’ve seen it too. Or you saw the original in Paris years ago, or something.
Anyway, I went with 3 friends and although we all enjoyed it, it seemed to mean quite different things to all of us. For one of us the emphasis was on the portraiture of three men reaching the Autumn of their lives; for another it was about the birth of the 1960s / death of the 50s (Withnail & I plus 10, basically); I read it as primarily a war story – three men who, 40 years after the end of the war, were still in the trenches.
So, have you seen it? What did it do for you? |
