Cameron Stewart Sort-Of Interview

There's a tv show called Dinner For Five, in which actor/director Jon Favreau and four other actors would sit, eat, and casually converse about acting, the art of cinema, and whatever other pertinent Hollywood topics arose. A few months ago I had dinner at a Toronto cafe with fellow artists Kalman Andrasofzky (DC Comics' "iCandy", Dreamwave's "Warlands"), Ramon Perez (Speakeasy's "Spellgame" and "Butternut Squash") and writer Brenden Fletcher. Our conversation was recorded and is now available for your listening pleasure.

It's in two parts, here and here.

The entire thing runs for about 2 hours, and we cover a bunch of interesting topics about the process of drawing and creating comics. I also talk about my work on Manhattan Guardian and let slip a few details about my forthcoming Vertigo book.

(As it's a recording of an actual dinner conversation, we don't get formally introduced and it may take a while to figure out who's who, so I'll say that *my* first words in the recording are "The original Ocean's 11 is a piece of shit. The remake is one of those rare occasions where the remake is better than the original. But Ocean's 12, man, I hated that movie." If that statement makes you cringe, then maybe you might not want to listen to me and my shit for two hours).

Anyway, thought it might be of interest to those who are interested about how artists view their own work and how we go about making comics...

I was waiting for you to show up on the Horcast, aka The Bestest Comics Podcast On Earth. I'll definitely be giving this a listen.

Just finished this. You will thrill as Guardian #4's STEWART SECRETS OF THE NEWSBOY ARMY are revealed.

The reason why the Horcast rocks such sweet sweet ass is because it so vividly portrays the realities of a career in comics. Artistic Impulse v. Deadlines (see: Guardian #4). Earlier episodes with Karl talking about AoS were equally fascinating and the balance between the Horhausers, from Mainstream to Indie make each episode a total must-listen. Having Cameron join on these two episodes was just icing on an already fabulous cake.

Considering I'm going through my Morrison books with a fine tooth comb these days, of particular interest was Cameron's executive decision making in Seaguy, as far as Splash Page design.

I've to ask, Cameron. Did you make the call on the Double Page Splash in Guardian #3?

Nope, that was written into the script as a climactic final spread. I think the only difference was that Grant wanted it as an aerial shot, but, as usual, I was under the gun and had to make an executive decision to bring it down to ground level because it was easier to draw.

I actually think it has more impact that way anyway.
