I am trying to regain an old sci fi fantasy of flying around in space, trading and shooting things, i just got hold of x2 and freespace 2 (not exactly in the same lane as elite but still i get to shoot things in space), anybody have any recommendations on other games in a similar vein or hints and tips fpr the games mentioned.

Reminds me of traveller and spacemaster as well, which is where my love of space opera sci fi comes from.

It's still in development and pretty clunky, but it looks very promising. The universe is HUGE though, so prepare to get lost a few times.

If you're not in it for the eye candy, there's also Escape Velocity: here (the first two installments were Mac only, but they exist as plugin for EV:N — but if you have a Mac you'll know this game already).

I'm playing Eve and thoroughly enjoying it too. It looks beautiful and is unbelievably massive to boot. It currently holds the record for the most amount of players online on one server (there is only one) of around 17000. Don't do much trading though - combat and salvage all the way...

What's the combat like in Eve? I got the impression from the brief preview I played that it was point and click mainly and over very quickly. It was the thing that Elite had that Frontier *spits* didn't, it felt like you were piloting a ship rather than clicking a mouse. Me bitter about Frontier? Noooooo.
