Do PMs clog up the board in any way?

OK, I've a few PM's saved in my Messages log, and was wondering, do these clog up the system at all? Is it wise to delete them, or OK to retain them, or what?

Ta!

Not to an extent that it would be helpful to delete any messages...

From what I understand Tom has to keep copies of all PMs anyway for legal reasons so you deleting things only effects what YOU can see...

It'd probably be more worthwhile thinking about ways in which we can go about deleting old posts and threads. Considering Barbelith has been dying a slow death for some time I move that we begin by deleting all new threads and new posts to old threads as they occur. This essentially preserves the older more quality material for longer. Once we have an idea about the amount of manpower it will take to hold back the river we can then go about attacking the mountain of older material, until the entire site is cleared.

What, as quality control you mean? Whilst a lot of the Conversation could be jetisoned quite safely, who is to say what's worth keeping from other threads, especially as Tom keeps them for legal reasons.

No. I mean delete everything. I'm being very silly.

More seriously, there is no value in deleting anything on the board whatsoever. I keep everything in the database anyway, and I have more than enough disk space to handle everything at the moment. Thanks for the thought though.

less seriously, I can think of some things there would be value in deleting...

Unnecessary apostrophes in thread titles, for a start.

No, I mean delete everything

This, once again, is a very good idea. The sooner we get rid of all the dead wood on this board and start talking about what really matters, ie, revolvers, kevlar, grenades and so forth, the happier, I suspect, everyone will be. And I mean especially the people who don't, as yet, self-identify as 'gun nuts.' I don't think the question is so much whether Barbelith needs a 'weapons' forum, as whether, in fact, it actually needs to have anything else.

Tom - since the board is heavily text-based, it can't take up that much room, right? Just because I'm curious - how much space does Barb take up on your computer? (Do you need a super-computer like DeepBlue? Or do you have one of those super-super-super computers that can calculate chess moves to the trillions? The puters that we really need to be afraid of.)

Er. It's a difficult question to answer, bluntly. Barbelith has its own server, if that's what you're asking. It's not a terribly high-powered machine, but it works. It's difficult to assess exactly how much disk space Barbelith takes up in its current form since - unlike the previous versions - it doesn't create static pages, but each page is summoned magically from a database when you request it. But there have been 517906 posts to the board over 22990 topics, and 71624 private messages sent. So that should give you some sense of the scale of the thing...

Can we have a Weapons forum please?

Money Shot - All of the above answers are part of an evil conspiracy of obfuscation. The truth is that every time you send a PM a puppy dies. The truth will become self-evident when this message is deleted to preserve the Noo Whirled Ordaaah.
