Couldn't find an existing thread on this. Did anyone else enjoy this brief ride through hell with a man and his .303 bolt-action rifle?
I had no clue the series would be so short, and I'm still wondering what purpose the slaughterhouse story served, but this tale ended exactly in the way it deserved. I loved it. Anyone else read this?

I had a flick through the first issue of this with some interest because the Lee-Enfield .303 in all its various iterations is a pretty remarkable weapon, spanning from the end of Victoria's reign to the opening battles of the Cold War.

Unfortunately, after flicking through it looked like Ennis was again writing in the same vein as the Preacher and the Punisher. Which should be good for him as there appears to be a fair few people who like that, but I'm not one of them.

There was an in-between story set at a slaughterhouse that felt very generic and formulaic, like a leftover Punisher story. But I thought the first three issues were thoughtfully written. The main character is a Russian who witnesses the death of his squad in defense of a huge secret. Then he heads to America to avenge his comrades with one rifle and one bullet with. Ennis actually brewed up some smart political discourse from a bitter Russian soldier's point of view, and in the end, the Russian effects his vengeance, having found it to be his purpose in life. Like a one-bullet Punisher, still I suppose, but with a different take on hero/villain.
The story slacked with issues 4 and 5, but I'm glad I kept picking it up.

Is anyone else reading Jack Cross by Garth Ennis?

I'm not going to make a fool of myself by explaining why I am if they aren't, basically.

I'm loving Jack Cross as well. But that's Warren Ellis writing Jack Cross.

I quite enjoyed 303 myself. Didn't think it was quite as...mmmm, can't think of an appropriate word to describe what I disliked about Preacher... Haven't read any of Ennis's Punisher, so I can't compare the two, but I was very glad that there was no cod-Irish character in it for Ennis to mangle.

I'm not sure I liked the series very much because up until only a couple of issues were all right but the last one was surprisingly strong and it seems Ennis decided to get on the Iraq (war) train as well.

It's worth picking up on its own as a short story and all you need to know is in this thread.
