Soundtrack Help

Ok my flatmate is editing a documentary at the mo and is a bit stuck when it comes to the soundtrack. The editor likes Lemon Jelly but everyone and their mother uses them. So any ideas for odd soundtrack or soundtrack style stuff, preferably with guitars but no singing that she could use?

You can use Last.fm. You type in music you like, and they give you related music.

For Lemon Jelly they give The Chemical Brothers, Groove Armada, Mr. Scruff, Massive Attack, The Avalanches, Basement Jaxx, Fila Brazillia, Blue States, Amon Tobin, Faithless. And that´s just the first 10 suggestions.

Ummm...he has the budget to clear these synch's, then?

'Cos, like, none of them are cheap. The number of times we've been asked to re-do Lemon Jelly tracks for commercials because the budget wasn't available takes the piss.

If multi-million pound ad-spend clients can't afford it, methinks a documentary maker may have issues. Unless he's mates with the band / publisher / whoever has the rights to exploit the publishing and synchs.

What's the doc about? Is there any sort of budget? How much time do you have to get the music together?

The documentary is for a episode for one of the BBC documentary series and yeah, I am assuming they will do the necessary for clearance for use of music. Unlike an ad the film will only have a limited showing and also only small snipits of the music is used, not the whole song, so I'm certain the perameters for costs will be different. Not insignificant, but certainly less horrific.

The person concerned is the housemate of invisible_al and me and whilst she and the director have both made musical suggestions, the commissioning editor didn't like what they offered so they are now desparately searching around for other musical ideas, whilst still finding the time to edit the film. Hence the question being put to you wonderful music buffs.

The time frame is asap as the film will be broadcast in two weeks or so.

Thanks for the suggestions so far, I will let her know what you have all said and if anyone has any more ideas, please bring them on.

Actually thinking about it, if there's anyone on the FatCat label that would be of interest give me a shout, should be easily sortable.

Bespoke is the way to go!

Hire a composer.

I'm free. Well, not free, but, you know, available.

ahhh the bbc- i believe they have blanket clearance on the music they use by paying a whopping fee to PRS annually- so you probably can use any music.

(*threadrot* I believe this is why The white stripes 'fell in love with a girl' can be used by a BBC Talent promotion but not in a commercial/ movie without clearance, I could be wrong but i seem to remember hearing something along those lines... *threadrot ends*)

what is the subject matter/ tone of the documentary? It could help when suggesting tunes/ artists?

Well, totally!

What's the doc about? What does it look like?

I could give you a really long list of stuff that would be good on documentaries and fit those criteria, but...?

It's the same in the TV station I work in, that's why all the promo's tv stations show have any music they want on them.
Apart from the Beatles and U2. Leave them well alone.

I'll second the Mogwai suggestion, Explosions in the Sky are another great post rock band that maybe usable.
The Warp records idea is a good one as well.

I'll do it, if you don't mind lo-fi.

You can also steal ideas from www.npr.org "All Songs Considered."

Public radio is always using instrumental bits between spoken pieces (especially the Marketplace music blog).

I'm also very fond of instrumental bands like The Mermen and Daikaiju. Post-surf postrock.

Oh, and my buddy in Burnside Project has already had some stuff used in the American Queer as Folk and Jackie Chan movies. It's a hybrid of techno/dancey stuff and guitar indie rock.

Thank you for your all of your suggestions so far, I'll be giving my housemate a listen to some of the tracks/artists tonight and we'll see how we go.

Regarding a composer, they have one engaged at the moment, but they are not able to compose all the music for the film for the money that is available, but that is certainly one road they have been down.

Unfortunately it's not for me to say much about the film at the moment, except that it's a very interesting personal story. We will be able to tell you more closer to the time. Sorry to be so clandestine, but I'm sure you'll understand the need to be circumspect until the film is ready to be shown.

Ignacio Agrimbau is an excellent composer based in Southampton, studying under Michael Finnissy. He'd do it dirt cheap and quickly and you'd get something quality too. Happy to put you in touch with him.

Heh, just asked Jules and they went with the original composed music and stuff like T-Rex, The Undertones, Barry White here and there. Comissioning editor still hated it all, but then you can't please everyone.

Oh they did consider Nouvelle Vague's version of Teenage Kicks at one point, but changed their mind. But it's still a fun track so I mention it.

Will give people a heads up when it's on TV.

I was going to mention that in the most recent issue of The Wire, Earth head honcho Dylan Carlson said that he would love to be invited to do a film score...maybe next time.

Christ, that Nouvelle Vague track is so overused already.

If you speak to commissioning editors and DM's in charge of such things, maybe mention that there is a. whole. album. of songs. by. them. and that it is not contractually required to use Teenage Kicks on every alternate fucking program.

Sorry. Ranting.

Well they ended up using the orginal version so not damage, but Our flatmate has a similat rant about Lemon Jelly. If ever good music was damaged through over-use it was that.
